I am trying to figure out how to address to adult children living at home with parents and younger children. If I address it to 'The Smith Family', they might bring their younger children to the adult reception. And I don't think I need to send 2 invites to the same address.
HELP!

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
Im having the same issue. I made sure my response card indicated the amount of guests invited (__ seats reserved in your honor) and also you can put the names of exactly who you want invited on the inner envelope. That way there is no confusion. If you dont have inner envelopes, you can always just call them and let them know that there will be no kids at your wedding except those in the weddng party.

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
hmm that is tricky...I would say to be safe just spell out exactly who is invited to the reception on the invitation. Personally, if i got an invite addressed to my family I would assume all kids are invited...i find it strange to invite lets say 2 of the 4 kids; i would expect all or nothing.

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
If they're adults, they should get their own invitation. JMO.
You could also address them on the inner invitation
Outer: The Smith Family
Inner Mr and Mrs. Joseph Smith Mr. Adam Smith
Or just put the above on the outside, but I really think adults need their own invitation. I broke this rule in one instance for my 20 year old cousin. I just did 'The jones Family' and lsited all 4 names on the inside since they are travelling cross country and I knew he wasn't bringing a date and it's a family thing, so they're coming as one entity

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
Thats the thing. These families are traveling, so I figured we would invite the whole family. And them FMIL heard this....
'Are you kidding me? You want screaming kids at your wedding?!?'
Ok, I have FIVE flowergirls....no matter what there will be screaming.
So maybe I should include the children....(there's a fairly good chance the families won't be coming anyways)

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
I sent separate invites to them. One household got 3 individual invitations! I think its best to be clear as to who is invited. IMO its worth just sending a few extra out.

In this situation... OOT families should be invited with kids if you already have some kids invited. I have 11 children on my guest list. It doesn't bother me.

If it were, esp if they're OOT, I'd invite the whole shebang

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
I would probably just invite the kids as long as they aren't like under 5 or something

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
I believe 'children' who are 18 or older should get their own invitation. If you are doing inner & outer envelopes, you can write Mr & Mrs John Smith on the outer, and John, Jane, Kid 1 and Kid 2 on the inner.

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
Technically, anyone over 18 should receive a separate invitation.
As an aside: The whole writing names on the inner envelope thing always makes me laugh because of something that happened to me right after I graduated from college. I was in my first BP and the invitation came. I knew the bride was inviting me with a guest because she kept telling me to hurry up and find a date. Anyway, the invitation arrived and it was addressed to me...no 'and guest' on the envelope. It wasn't until I called her to ask that she said, 'did you read the inner envelope?' Well, um..no. At the time, I had no idea anyone wrote anything on those so I just tossed it aside. Had I not called, I would have thought she'd changed her mind about giving me a guest.

JMO, but personally, i would be offended if you invited 2 of my kids but not the others, for example. if your dead set on it, send each person their own invitiation. becauser each adult gets their own. or put their names spelled out on the front - but it might look too cluttered

I did. I would send one to the parents and then gave the 'adult child' their own invite. I wanted to make sure it was clear who was invited. It's also my thinking they really should have their own anyway. I was invited to a wedding this past weekend and they sent the invitation to my parents and me on the same envelope. Yes, I live with them but i felt I should have been given my own.

Re: Question on Invitation addressing
And we have an 18 over rule - we made three exceptions: two siblings 1 is 18 one is 17. A 16 and 17 year old from out of town. And the last exception was FH's sister LOL

LOL this so happened to me! My cousin got married this past October and FH's name wasn't on the invites. I was trash talking her so bad - then when I went to get the invite to mail back my 'no' RSVP I saw the inner envelope. I was like 'oh crap.' We went and then got her an extra gift because I felt so bad!
