Question re: choosing Godparents.

One person who we have talked about possibly choosing has been very self-absorbed. They forget family members birthdays and don't call to check up on family when they are sick (like Grandma). So here is our concern: If we pick them, we are afraid they will forget to call or send a card for the baby on their birthday. Its not about gifts. Its just about making them feel important and if they are forgetful, that doesn't make anyone feel important. What would you do?

Re: Question re: choosing Godparents.

I think that Godparents should be people that we know will be close to our babies and also believe in the same religious beliefs. But, of course, family BS enters and sometimes we chose people who know are not the best person for the 'job' but we don't want to cause a War in the family.
Scott and I HAD to meet in the middle of this issue. We chose his brother, who is a nice guy but I KNOW will totally flake out on many things and my best friend, who I KNOW will love my child, be a wonderful person in his/her life and never, ever forget about him/her. I have spoken to Scott about his brother's role and he mentioned to his brother that this is very important to both of us and we hope it is also important to him. If he ever forgots a b-day he will hear it BIG TIME from me! He is also not religious and that is something that bothers me A LOT about asking him but the fights with Scott over 'we have to pick someone in his family too' were getting us no where.

If you are just picking someone to prevent a family arguement, consider what the other alternatives are. Maybe there is someone else who will make a better Godparent. But in the end you should do what is best for your child and your marriage.
