I am not sure if anyone on here has adopted, or knows of anyone who has, I have a basic question. As we all know new mommies get time off from work (disability) to care for their infants. Does the same hold true for adopting? It is something we may consider down the road, so I was just wondering if anyone had any information.

Re: Question re:Adoption
I don't know if this is universal (and I HOPE it is!), but I know my school district gives the same maternity leave to adopting moms as it does to birth moms.

Re: Question re:Adoption
I'm pretty positive that you do get a maternity leave for adoption. I would look into it if I were you.

Re: Question re:Adoption
You are entitled to FMLA (Family Medical Leave) when you adopt or give birth -- 12 weeks of unpaid leave in order to care for the child. Most companies are subject to this, with some minor exceptions.
This is not the same as disability, which works in conjunction with FMLA.

Re: Question re:Adoption
There are some family friendly companies around that give some paid time off to adopting parents and actually pay for some of the adoption cost. Unfortunatley this is far from the norm.
The key with FMLA is this leave is unpaid. There are not many companies around that actually have maternity leave. The time that is usually paid to new Moms is Short Term Disability Leave. Adopting Moms or Dads are not Disabled so they do not receive this benefit.
