How many place settings are you supposed to have??? I have heard 8, 10 and 12??? I am looking to finish my registry off but not sure.

DH and I have a set for 8, but I would like to buy 2 more place settings. just incase something breaks or we have more than 8 ppl over for a dinner party.
ETA: Mable, thanks for reminding me! I just ordered 2 more place settings of our fine china and they were on sale!

we registered for 12 but received 13 and I decided to keep the extra setting b/c I got for free a few extra waterford wine and water glasses when my 12 were purchased. So I have 13 dishes, 14 glasses and 12 sterling.
Of regular stuff I have 12 of each (dishes, glasses, and silverware). I also have 12 glass dishes that we use for entertaining light - i.e. I don't want to pull out the good stuff but I want to be fancy.

it's rare that we have a lot of people over, so we put 8 settings on our registry and received 7.
However, I have a set of older china (72 pieces total) that is in perfect condition that I can use when we have more then 8 people over
