Question to Curly Haired Brides:

I keep hearing from hairdressers that before putting curly hair in an updo it needs to be blowdried straight, then put up, and them curled with the curling iron. That about taking advantage on my hair natural curles? Did anyone have/ plans on having/ had trials with curly hair in natural state? Is it possible? I want to have a low, pretty large bun that shows off my natural curls. Any advice, pictures? THANKS!

No way my curls will be in natural state. i love the way my hair curls when I pull it back off my face. Im sure she will have to do some magic with the curling iron and rollers, but my hair will be curly before starting.

My sister has very curly hair and her hairdresser used her natural curl. It was up with ringlets hanging down. It was very pretty! I would go for a trial and tell them what you want!

I have curly hair, and I've gotten my hair done as a BM a few times. Yes, they did use a curling iron to make the curls nicer. After playing with it to put it up, the curls got kinda frizzy, so a curling iron made the curls shinier and neater.

I think it probably depends on the individual's actual hair type .. there are so many different kinds of curly! I also think it might depend on the type of wedding-day style you are looking to achieve.

I have curly hair, but I did not have to have my hair straightened, then curled with an iron .. talk about stress to your tresses! Come to think of it, I don't even think I needed my hair straightened for french twists I had done years back for a couple of Christmas parties, which were done by a different hairdresser.

Anyway, for my wedding, I washed and dried my hair as I normally do, only left out the hairspray part. Kristen from Enchante Salon and Day Spa did the rest. I don't even think she needed a curling iron to fix any curls .. which she had said during the trial 'might' be needed.

The only product I used when I dried my hair was 'Funky Chunky' .. it's a very sheer, lightweight styling product that you don't need much of to help you keep smooth curls without the stiffness other styling products can leave, like gels and such. A careful hairdresser is also a huge plus .. the more they play with your hair, the more frizz you will get.

Edited to add that my hair style was the sides and top gently pulled into a bun wrap headpiece, with ringlets around my face, and a bit of curly bangs, and the back of my hair was left down .. falling just past shoulder length.

whatnow, most hair dressers will tell you that, but if you'll object, they can do a trial with your natural curls.
My hair is curly, and I have a lot of it, but its fine hair (as opposed to coarse). For the trial, I objected to straightening. My hairdresser, curled my curles more with a barrel iron, so that all curls were more uniform. I am wearing hair half up and half down, and all the curls will look the same, as opposed to some larger and some smaller strands.
She claimed my hair was relatively easy to work with, b/c it was so fine, so coarser hair may be a bit harder.

I am trying to picture a bun that shows curls, and can't think of any. Wouldn't a bun hide curls b/c everything will be tucked in? or will you have curl pieces coming out of the bun?

I had my hair done as a BM for my friend's wedding. All she did was pin it vup and use a curling iron so that my curls did not look to frizzy. I think it depends on what style you want your hair to be. I think that you should not have to blow it straight and then-recurled, but i guess it also depends on the thickness of your hair. I have VERY thick hair (I actually get it chemically straightened and it is still very very curly - I normally have Diana Ross big hair!!) Good luck!

My hairdresser plays around with my hair depending on the style I want. I have very natural curly hair and one style I wanted when I had to attend a formal affair she had to blow my hair out straight, style it, and then curl it with the curling iron.

Another up do I want to do for the wedding I showed her the picture and she said we will work on it, as soon as I have my headpiece. I asked her if she could keep my natural curls instead of blowing them out and curling them with the iron, she said we will have to work with the style and the headpiece, but will do her best to keep my natural curls.

I've been going to this woman for 10 years, she knows my hair, my style, what I like and dont like so because of this I have 110% confidence in her with my hair for the wedding and she will know what will work best.

My hair isn't that thick so I prefer it to be blown first so that it looks neater. I think when you have thicker hair, natural curls hold better. Mine definitely would not look better left natural!

Wow! That's alot of brides with curly hair! YEY, I am not alone! I see now I have options, no blow drying for me, I would hate doing that! My hair is very thick so I think it will look ok if it's not blow-dried first. I think the best would be to get it really wet, but not wash it so it's not too dry and freezy, then set in a style while still a little damp with some serum in it and then let it dry naturally. That way the curls will form to be large and more defined, rather then kinky and feezie. May be my stylist would want to touch a few strands with curling iron but that's it.

Yeah, When I said 'bun' I ment some sort of structure with curles sticking out of it, not sure what it's called! I am imagining it in my head (and on my head ) but can't really come up with a good name or a better description! Hopefull my stylist will! I already told her I don't want blow-dry, and she said she will come up with something! THANK YOU LADIES!

I have been told by hairstylists that wet hair not a good idea on a wedding day. In fact they asked me to make sure its dry when they start with it.

May be let it stay dry and then have the hair person moisten it where necessary. I had a trial with moist hair and it was a disaster.

I have to agree .. it might not be a good idea to leave your hair wet .. my hair is much fuller when I take my time blowing it dry, after I've washed and conditioned it. If I leave it wet, it is very flat with no bounce, despite the curl. I would also suggest being careful with the serum you chose .. some can be very heavy. Try a few to see what works best for you. Again, I recommend trying Funky Chunky.

You might want to experiment with a different hair dryer .. one that lets you dry with a cooler heat setting .. I've found the hotter the air I use, the more likely I am to get frizzies. Also, the more I rush to dry my hair .. again, the more likely I am to get frizzies. The dryer I use now is one of those with a diffuser-type attachment on the end, which is supposed to aid in the time it takes to dry your hair .. so that allows me to use the cool heat setting, which is almost like no heat at all. Fortunately, I rarely have days with frizzy hair.


As for the bun thing .. while my hair was pulled into a bun wrap .. it wasn't wrapped into a tight bun, but rather my hair was twisted from the roots out, with the ends left loose, as curls peaked from the top of the headpiece. You didn't actually see a typical 'bun.' Hope that makes sense.

YES! That's exactly what I was thinking: roots twisted under and the ends sticking out! So, no wet hair, eh? I guess I will just let it air dry then! Blow dryers scare me! May be I should try the one with the defuser that you guys are talking about!

I'm glad you asked that question! I have curly hair too and have been thinking of what to do with it. The one time I got an updo, the girl brushed out my curls then pinned my hair up and curled the ends with a curling iron. By the end of the night it looked like crap!
If you find any good updo pictures for curly hair, please post for us!!!

P.S. I let my hair air dry most of the way then I use a diffuser to blow dry it the rest of the way while lifting it gently at the roots to get some volume. It works - no frizzies!

In the summer i usually let my hair dry naturally and i get great curls. I got a compliement from some girl. She asked where I got my fantastic perm and how much I paid for it. I told her its natural. She didnt believe me.

I love my hair curly. FI does too.

You just have to experiement with what works for you. I cant use that serum stuff as it makes my hair feel really funny and I have to use the defusser with the cool air setting for the blow dryer. I also only use saloon selective hair products. I have fine curly hair so just like my skin, i can only use specific hair products otherwise my hair looks like a disaster.

I had my hair in a bun for my prom and it was not blown out straight first. I have never had my hair blown out straight before having an updo. Using a curling iron after it is done works really well because like others have said, the curls tend to frizz a little after being pulled back and the curling iron makes them nice again. I would suggest going for trials and telling them exactly what you want done.
