Question to possibly quench certain posters' thirst for controversy...

Original post by BMD'sPeanut

I have a question for anyone who is of another religion besides Catholic.

People are often times knocking the Church for their position on things...

But I'm wondering...Can two Jewish men walk into a Synagogue and get married? What about two women walking into a Mosque? Would they be able to get married?

If not, why is the heat always on the Church?

There are those who say that her Grandfather had something to do with it, I don't want to speculate. However, Like I said, it depends on each and every individual synagogue. Some synagogues allow interfaith within their walls. The only way to find out the complete and total truth is to call each synagogue and ask them their stance on gay marriage - which I feel is too time consuming.

The easy answer is that there ARE synagogues that allow it.

Geez, why is everyone getting on my case for stating this fact?

So what you are saying is that it's an individual thing by Synagogue?

No one jumping it is just shocking and since there is a lot of underlying facts to the story you used as an example I would say more likely not then yes. No jumping I promise

Because there isn't enough controversy in the thread that is looking to quench certain posters' thirst for controversy

Actually, I think that people are just hearing different things and are curious. Like I said, I had heard that certain sects of Judiasm DO allow gay marriages.

Look, in Judaism, there's a lot of room for interpretation. They say that if you put 4 Jews in a room you'll come out with 6 opinions.

Certain sects of Judaism adhere very strictly to the Torah, others put it to interpretation. And each synagogue's procedures largely depend upon the Head Rabbi of that synagogue's interpretation.

It's not so unbelievable, really.

Princess Rose, I'm sorry..I really wasn't getting on your case for this. Seriously. I am just shocked because I have never heard of it taking place in a synagogue. It's an honest reaction!

I liek this one the best!

Can you imagine what the answer would be to that!! ooooooo!

I would image it would be something like: well, two nothings together still makes nothing! So, no, you can't make a family!

Apology accepted, but just because you haven't heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

FYI

The RELIGIOUS RIGHT does not equal Catholic.

What does this mean?

It means that when people talk about the 'Religious Right' and their influence in politics- it's usually NOT the Catholics- but others like born agains, methodists, etc..

?????????????????

Catholic implies affiliation with the Catholic Church, allegiance to the Pope, etc.

The Religious Right is often comprised of Protestants (Methodists, Lutherans, Born-Agains, basically all but Catholics).

Catholics are generally not affiliated with the Religious Right.

Thanks! You explained that very well.

I'll bite: I don't think the heat is always on the church because of gay marriage. We all know almost every religion forbids this. The heat is on the church mostly because of the pedophilia scandals. Whenever I hear complaints about the church they always seem to center around that.

Dina, I hope I didn't imply that I was equating Catholic with the Religious Right. As a Catholic, I am always happy to distance myself from the Religious Right whenever possible.

I just wanted to make it clear- I'm Catholic too.. and although I don't agree with their policy, I do agree with the spiritual side... I don't want people who aren't Catholic to think we're with those loons.
