Question/Rant re: Seating Arrangements

So starting seating arrangements have not been fun because for starters Danfords keeps changing their answer on how many people a table seats and because I've now found out that about half of FH's very large family cannot stand various people from the family or family friends. So I reply that some people in my family don't get along either but I would ASSUME that the expectation is that if you go to a wedding everyone behaves for four hours! Once you send in that response card, you behave. I told him I'd do what I can but it isn't a huge hall and we're close to their max for it and we need to fill these tables and it's like a big game of tetris right now. I said it's silly to break up the table of high school friends who know each other or college friends who know each other or coworkers to throw a stray family member in there.

I then realize where all of this is coming from after I overhear FMIL on the phone saying this one is gonna sit with me and seat those people all together and these people will be at your dais. At this point I tell FH that we are going to be in charge of seating not his mother from the backseat and he agrees with me. Two days ago she comes over and turns to me and starts asking questions about who is where and put this person here or there and he's like 'mom we haven't worked on it yet' and when she mentions the DAIS I tell her no it's not our whole BP it's just the 2 of us which she doesn't like because FH's brother didn't do it that way.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is anyone's families trying to dictate where everyone goes and make lists of who someone can't sit near? My mom tried to say this person is with me and that person can't sit with that person and I said 'great we'll see how that works out' and that was the end of it.

I foresee more

Yup..my MIL made a list of all her tables...she made tables of 8..we are supposed to have tables of 10. So now that my FIL wants to add his coworkers, I made all her tables 10 so I could use the extra table for his stupid co-workers, and I don't give a rat's a$$ who should sit with who..don't go crazy trying to make it work..they sit down for dinner only..after that, they can move around as they please lol.

You are totally not alone. Seating has been the worst part of planning for us!! And seating my closest family is actually the most difficult.

Just a little suggestion of how to make it easier, Buy a big construction paper and draw your Reception room (the table, the bar everything) do the drawing with pen and next to each table put a line for each chair you want to have in each table.. Than you can use a pencil to put the name of people. Inside the table you can write (something like work people, friends, DH cousins, bride aunts etc).. This is what I did and it make it much easier to arrange people and switch tham from table to table.. HTH
