Questions about Celiac Disease - Gluten Intolerance
If you are gluten intolerant, how was it discovered? Did it take a while for your doctor to diagnose you properly? What kind of symptoms did you have?
Thanks

Re: Questions about Celiac Disease
I don't have celiac, but I am allergic to gluten (have no clue what the difference is).
For 20 years I've suffered with stomach problems, diagnosed with IBS, ulcers, 'nervous stomach', etc. Probably have been called a hypochondriac quite a few times too I had cramps, nausea/vomiting, and lets just say I wasn't regular, it was one extreme or another.
It was actually my acupunturist that suggested I be tested for gluten allergies after I mentioned that I felt so much better when I was on Atkins.
Lo and behold, went to my Dr and he did a blood test and it came up postive!

Re: Questions about Celiac Disease
Celiac Disease is gluten intolerance. My doctor told me twice it's 'probably IBS or stress' and is beginning to treat me like a hypochondriac!
Thanks for sharing.

Celiac Disease is gluten intolerance.
That's not strictly true -- or should I say, that's not only true. I have a severe wheat gluten allergy, which manifests itself similarly to Celiac in most ways, except for one crucial difference: Celiac is a severe autoimmune disease which can lead to severe intestinal damage if left untreated; it can also cause severe osteoporosis (although now studies are saying any gluten free diet may contribute to it.) Celiac is also closely associate with some sort of dermatological rash.
As far as I know, the best method for diagnosing Celiac is through a small bowel biopsy. My allergy was diagnosed by blood work.

I just wanted to let you know my friend has it and I just recommended:
Amys frozen food line. Target & Pathmark carries it, Its all organic and gluten free. Target is half the price. I know its hard to find things you can eat so I figured Id let you know. Their cheese encheladas are great!

Trader Joe's has some gluten free products as well. In the front of the store, I think they have a sheet of paper that lists all the gluten free stuff they carry.

I love AMy's kitchen. I eat it b/c I'm a vegetarian. I actually hate the cheese enchiladas. Haha. I love the dinners and the shepherd's pie. They have a lot of great stuff.
I'm beginning to think I have some kind of lactose or gluten intolerance, I've been having weirs tomach problems lately. Ask your doctor specifically about it, they don't always test for everything. Good Luck!
Whole Foods also has a TON for gluten free food, along with Amy's. Waldbaums also carries Amy's Kitchen

DH sister's baby is in the process of being tested for this. She has gone through so much and the doctors have told SIL the blood tests are not showing that Celiacs is what she has, but they really felt it was. They even did a biopsy, but it also came back negative. They said it could show negative also, even if she does have it b/c the area they tested may not have been affected. It's so frustrating!!! The poor baby has had so many tests - last week she had an appt. with an immuniologist but I don't think they got results back from that yet.
Now, SIL says the dr's are maybe thinking that she doesn't have it, but it seems there is no definitive answer for them

Just a word of caution -- not ALL of the Amy's Organics foods are gluten free. But if you go to their website http://www.amyskitchen.com/ you will find a list of which foods are. They are always clearly marked in the lower right hand corner if they are GF.
Also highly recommended: anything by Glutino (frozen breads, bagels, etc), and Tinkyada pasta.
