Questions about cereal- PLEASE HELP!

I know some of you girls are feeding your baby cereal and I'm wondering if I should start. First of all I want everyone to know that it's me who doesn't want to start feeding her cereal and my doctor seems to agree.

First off she's 16 weeks and 2 days old and she is 15 pounds 4 oz as of last Friday...she is thriving in everyway and is sleeping a good 6 to 7 hours...would I love for her to sleep more? YES but I am breastfeeding her and it's uncomfortable for me when I go for long periods of time without releasing the breastmilk (I keep the pump at work)

Mia only gets formula on Monday's (because I'm home all weekend) I don't see what the big rush is to start feeding her cereal if she doesn't need it. But it seems like everyone here is doing it and my friends are too.

I worry about her not getting satisfied enough if I start giving her more...I'm confused because I am still against feeding her food when she doens't NEED it. any comments? Thanks!

Re: Questions about cereal- PLEASE HELP!

I started Lyla 2 days before she turned 5 months. That is when her Dr recommends and she seemed interested in food, can hold her head up well, and is the right weight.

I would have waited even longer (6 m) b/c she is doing fine with BM , and I have food allergies, eczema, asthma. BUT she wakes up every 2 hours, hardly naps and nurses very frequently, AND stopped taking bottles! So, I thought it was time.

I'm on a pregnancy board too, and it seemed like everyone started really early, by 4 months and very few are waiting. Many are already on Stage 2 foods. But, just b/c everyone is doing doesn't mean it's right for your baby.

If I were in your shoes, I would wait a few more weeks, what's the rush? I was anxious toob/c it seems fun (it is!). But on the other hand since Mia's weight is good, is there a physical reason why she'd need it?

I would wait also. She seems to be a nice weight. Yes, she is 4 months but is you are breastfeeding than most docs. (atleast mine did) say that you can wait till 6 months to introduce solids. Sleeping 6-7 hours at a time is WONDERFUL. Sleeping through the night for small babies is 5-6 hours at a time so you have it VERY NICE!!
Please do not go by what every one else is doing. Mia sounds like she is thriving on what you are providing for her. MO is to stick to it until you feel there is need for more.

I'd say wait also. There is no benefit she will get from cereal at her age that she doesn't get from breastmilk. I don't know why people are in such rushes to start feeding babies solids--the poop is disgusting and smellier. Breastmilk poop was so nice and easy to clean. At 6 months your doctor will probably recommend starting cereal because I think that is around when they need the additional vitamins and calories they don't get from breastmilk alone. Either way, do what YOU feel is right, not what others are doing! I have a girlfriend that has a baby 3 weeks younger than mine who was born premature and she is constantly trying to 'keep up' with me. I don't know why but she is and I feel bad for her feeling like she has to rush everything along that her son is doing.

It really is up to you, Camille!! Whenever you're ready and when you feel Mia is ready. Everything I've read advises to start 'solids' at 4-6 months.

At Sean's 2 1/2 month visit, his ped. said we could start him if we wanted b/c he has excellent neck control and sits up (assisted) very well, not to mention, he's a big boy. We had no intention of starting him that early so we didn't.

We just started him on rice cereal this past Monday (he'll be 4 months tomorrow). He absolutely loves it. He was soooo ready. He sits in his highchair, opens his mouth when the spoon comes near him, swallows w/o a problem and 'asks' for more when I'm apparently not feeding him fast enough!

When you do start, you'll love it!! It's so fun to see them enjoy something new. Tomorrow we move on to oatmeal!
