Questions about disability

We are actively TTC but at this point have been told we would most likely need to do IVF, which of coarse can result in multiples. I was wondering if anyone had any information on disability if for some reason there was a need to go on bed rest, or even how it works after the baby is born.

Any information would be great, or any information on who to contact.

I assume you work in New York State. You are eligible for NYS disability if you require bed rest. With NYS disability, you are eligible for payments (max $170 per week) on the eighth day (includes weekend) of your disability. If you need to go on and off bed rest, you only need to have the waiting period once.

After the birth, you are eligible for and additional 6 (vaginal) or 8 (c-section) weeks of paid disability.

Your employer may have other policies in place which will cover your salary. You should check with your HR department or your employee handbook.

Edited to say it was maxed out at $170 when I last worked almost 2 years ago. I don't know it has since increased.

Additional edit: I had twins and although I was not working during my pregnancy, I only needed sporadic days of bed rest, here and there. I carried to 39 weeks. Many MOT have healthy pregnancies without need for excessive bed rest, so be hopeful. Good Luck to you!

Kaycee - thank you so much for the information. I am first hopeful that we will get pg and second that there will be no need for bed rest, but just wanted to be prepared just in case.

I went out on disability before Gianna was born -- it was supposed to be 2 weeks before my due date, but since she came 5 days early, I was only out on it for a week. I received my full paycheck because I've been with this company for 15 years. I also received my full paycheck for my entire maternity leave.
