Questions about kitten/cats.....

DH and I are seriously considering adopting a kitten/cat. Our worry....I have several betta fish in separate bowls and I have a 10 gallon fish tank with tropical fish. Can you guess my question?

Do cats 'mesh' well with fish? would a cat eat my fish?

TIA

Re: Questions about kitten/cats.....

Cats can jump anywhere...mine jumps on top of the china closet (don't ask me how she gets up..i think she uses the table first). Cats mess with everything including my big dog..lol...but as long as your tank is covered it's fine...if it's open on top expect her to stick her furry paws in..

Re: Questions about kitten/cats.....

Our cat never messed with the beta, he had a lid on his tank. The same can't be said for our 2 goldfish. We didn't think that Baja (the kitten) could jump that high to get to the fish.....but unfortunatley for the goldfish he could.
Long story short, get a lid.

Re: Questions about kitten/cats.....

We have 2 cats and 3 fish tanks...one very close to the floor, one which is 75 gallons ( i think )

never had a problem with them not getting along. My old cat can't see the fish and ignores the tanks, the kitten loves to watch them swim...she also watches tv though, so i don't think she knows the difference...

i've never had a problem with cats trying to eat the fish

Re: Questions about kitten/cats.....

Our cat ate our fish a couple of weeks after we got him and ruined our computer in the process. We had one of those fish that are in a vase with a plant in it and they eat off that. Well once we got our cat we moved the fish to the computer room and closed the door. Well one night i forgot and the next day the vase was smashed, the keyboard was broken and the fish was gone. And my cat just looked at me.

RIP Chip (our fish)

I'm a pet groomer and also a cat and fish and dog owner, never underestimate what your kitty will do. They do what they want, when they want! protect everything

I want to get fish but my fi also doesn't think it'll be a good idea since the cat jumps on top of everything (not an easy feat considering he's 15 lbs!). I personally think my cat wouldn't pay mind to the fish, but just in case would get a lid. I also want birds...am I just wanting to torture my poor baby?
He needs a pal darn it!

I saw a fish bowl in a magazine the othe rday that hangs on the wall - you can keep the betta fish in it, and the cat would never get to it......

I have caught my 2 cats with their paws in an 80 gallon tank So...it should be fine as long as they are somewhere high and safe. But keep in mind, cats are crafty and can find ways to get almost anywhere! Since we moved into our house they have left the tank alone because they have no way to jump onto it.

Re: Questions about kitten/cats.....

i have a fish tank and a turtle tank. i've never had a problem with my cat and the other animals.. and she has a tendency to get into EVERYTHING else in the house lol..

altho she will dip her paws into the water for the heck of it cause theres a small opening in the back by the filter. and she will sit for hours and watch the turtle wandering around though. your best bet would probably be to find some sort of cover for the fish tanks and then you'll be fine.. just make sure the cat can't knock them over.

my cat doesnt care about the fish at all... sometimes I would try to show her the fishes but she remains uninterested
