Questions about Visiting Reception Halls

Original post by JAAMS

Soooo seeing as I have never planned any sort of Wedding before, I'm a little confused about what types of questions to ask reception halls when me and FH visit them. We're both in our early 20's, so I don't want us to seem 'naive' in addition to 'young.' I have some q's that I've thought of, but I wanted to ask you all what you thought are important q's to ask the potential reception hall.

Also, does anyone know what a typical deposit for a reception hall is? Is it a silly q to ask the reception hall if they accept credit cards or checks instead of just cash for such a thing?

In addition, how does the whole food tasting process work? When we're calling to book an appointment to look at the room, do we ask if we can sample the food when we're in? We want to make sure that the food is very good before we book a place, but we're not really sure when we're supposed to be asking to sample things.

Any other advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I am in the very same boat. Don't know where to begin in this whole search. Food is definitely important to me and my family as well. More than a low cost I want the most for my money!!!! GOing to look at CLM on Sunday I am wondering how many places I should see in total ? What is the possiblity of losing your ideal date if you don't book on the day you visit.

So I just started my search not that long ago, but I think I've gotten some basics down!

I don't there is a total number that you SHOULD see. FH & I are looking at almost 20, because we're both the types of people who will be looking back 'What if what if what if!' if we didn't. My first impressions of people/things are sometimes a bit skewed, so I really like to sit down and think things over for awhile. But if you're someone who really trusts her gut instincts, then why not go with the first place that you really love?

As far as the possibility of losing the date, I've been asking halls this because it really, really depends. For example, FH & I are realllly flexible (meaning we have like 4 different months that we're looking at). If you're looking for a really popular venue in the middle of June, you should probably book much sooner than if you're looking at an outdoor venue for the end of February. However, the most simplified answer that I have gotten from the RH's has been 'about a year and a half before.' But then again, that may be person specific as well.

HTH!
