Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
In August I was at 2 temple weddings - Temple Israel in Cedarhurst and Shelter Rock Jewish Center.
Temple Israel was the most beautiful temple I have ever seen (looked way more like a church - stained glass windows, mahogony everywhere). The ballroom was nice. Nothing spectacular IMO but definitely nothing bad. The food was more gourmet than I would have preferred and when we ordered the steak (I think it was filet mignon), they never asked us how we wanted it cooked .
Shelter Rock JC had a more standard temple but their ballroom was beautiful. The food was very good and overall it was a pleasant experience.
Liza, who's a member here but doesn't post much, is getting married at Oceanside Jewish Center in July so you should FM her. Also, duke (another member here who doesn't post too much) was at her brother's wedding at Jericho Jewish Center in October and has been also to Temple Beth El and many others (can't think of where else right now) so you should FM her as well.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I'm getting married at temple beth el in cedarhurst...it is stunning..at first I was put off at getting married at a temple bc they all look alike...but beth el looks like an old mansion...its stunning. Its ballroom is nicer than most of the ballrooms I've been to at reception halls...very elegant, open and has a feel of an old mansion...definitely check them out..there is also woodbury jewish center that is stunning too!!! Those were our top two choices...FM me for any more info!!

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
My wedding was at the EMJC. I didn't plan on having it at a Jewish Center but it felt right. I highly recommend it.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I also got married at EMJC. I was absolutely thrilled with them. I think the ballroom is beautiful. The food was wonderful, and working with Shawn, the banquet manager was terrific.
I have also been to weddings at Oceanside Jewish Center, which is the same caterer as EMJC, and Jericho Jewish Center. Both of these weddings were wonderful as well. I love temple weddings and I am so glad we chose to have ours in a temple.
I also looked at Shelter Rock Jewish Center, Sephardic Temple of Cederhurst, and Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center. Please FM me with any questions.
I'm going to bump the Jewish Brides thread for you...it might give you more ideas.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I will be married at Jericho Jewish Center. We also didn't plan on having our wedding at a temple, but found the cost of kosher catering to be much more reasonable at temples then other halls. I think it is a beautiful place and have heard only good things about it. Feel free to FM me with any questions.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I'm getting married at Temple Israel of Lawrence. It is a reform temple but we are having a more observant Rabbi marry us as parts of my family are orthodox (even though both FW and I are not). He is also the Rabbi that did my Bar-Mitvah way back when so we thought that would be nice.
We originally did NOT want to be married in a temple as the modern look of most of them did not appeal to us. Temple Israel, Lawrence coincidentally was the last place we looked before making our final decision and we both fell in love with it immediately. It is very classic looking and I believe the oldest temple on Long Island. Beautiful Mahogany throughout with a huge chapel and stained glass.
You'll be able to check out some pictures here:http://www.somersteincaterers.com/ From what we have heard from friends, etc. the food is also second to none.
It will definitely be worth your while to at least go and look at the place. One thing to consider however before booking... this temple will only permit 3 florists to work in their establishment: Spitz & Peck, Dalsimer, and Atlas. All rather pricey so make sure you absolutely love it and it is within your means before you go forward with any contract signing. All in all though, we could not be happier with our decision to book here and are eagerly awaiting our day!
Congratulations and Good Luck!!!

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
We are getting married at the Great Neck Synagogue. Everyone there has been extremely helpful. Like others said before, you are limited with respect to the florists you can use. We were limited to Stephan's (who we booked), Spitz and Peck, and I have heard from others if you beg the temple Dalsimers. We looked at the Woodbury Jewish Center - which has a wonderful cocktail hour reception room but we did not care for the synagogue part. We liked Temple Israel but as another poster put it the reception room left us with a lot to be desired. We liked everything about Great Neck Synagogue so we booked there. Lisa

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I'm getting married at East Meadow same caterers as Oceanside and now Temple Chaverim in Plainview.
My brother was married last year at Jericho Jewish Center.
My fiancee and I both decided on a Temple wedding even though neither one of us are religious.
As Jackie said, Shawn has been amazing to work with.
If you have any question, you can FM me.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
My brother got married last May at Shelter Rock Jewish Center in Roslyn and all I can say is that it was one of the most elegant and beautiful weddings that I have even been to - and i am not just saying that b/c it was my brother. The food was outrageous and they really went over the top for them!!!!

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I had my wedding at the Jericho Jewish Center last month. It was wonderful! They did such a great job. We used Spitz and Peck who ended up doing an incredible job. They truly went above and beyond. I haven't done my review yet, but plan to soon. In the meantime, feel free to FM me with any questions.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
Hi--Thanks to all who responded. Our wedding is now set at Temple Chaverim. Same caterers as Oceanside Jewish Center and East Meadow Jewish Center. I am thrilled with the choice. In the end we narrowed it down between Temple Chaverim and Temple Beth Sholom, but Chaverim won!!!! We will be having so much.......the cocktail hour offerings are incredible as are the desserts (I have a huge LOVE of Halvah, which will be on one of our dessert carts!!!!) . And the place is so gorgeous. I am really glad to be having a Temple wedding, especially because our friends have so many weddings to go to, but mostly not at Jewish Centers!!

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
You will LOVE Temple Chaverim. My cousin had her Bat Mitzvah there and it was JUST GORGEOUS.
My friend from college is the junior cantor there (at least she was last I heard) - Marnie Stolzenberg. BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL voice, very talented.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
Oh, I am so glad--hey, who does not love to hear good things about their hall!!!! So far I love it there!!!
I did not know that there is a junior cantor. We are having FMIL's rabbi who is not from Chaverim, and the Cantor who is from Chaverim. Chaverim's rabbi has approved this arrangement.

Re: questions about wedding at Jewish Center
I know you have chosen your Jewish Center but in case anyone else is looking. I was at some temple in great neck I think great neck jewish center last year and the wedding was awesome! The food was excellent, couldn't even tell it was all kosher! My sister's wedding was at Plainview Jewish Center in 2000 and I thought the food was pretty bad. The people there were really nice (except for the rabbi) and my sister had a great time but the cake was cardboard and the drinks were served in small juice glasses! I know I am very critical but the drink thing was huge for me....When I order a drink I don't want it in a juice glass.
