FH and I are going to talk to our first prospective DJ tonight. Any suggestions on 'must ask' questions?

Make sure they know the vibe you are going for, average age of your crowd, how they will handle requests made from the crowd (this is a big one... if you have a do not play list, and someone requests a song on that list, how will they handle the request?). Have they ever DJ'ed at your venue, do they provide screens if you want a montage, etc. Good luck!

Music was the MOST important for me, so I got you on this one!!
- Do you keep backup equipment - Do you all dress formally, in tuxes? - How many songs does the DJ have on him? (ours has 30k, but it's a good idea to just make sure they have alot of songs) - Does the DJ mix live, or just play straight tracks? - What is the energy level of the MC? Do you get to tailor how loud/softspoken he is? - Are weddings their primary focus? If they say they do sweet 16s, get out now!!! It is important to have a DJ that solely just does weddings - Do they tailor to your musical style and allow you to sit down and create lists of must-play lists, and do not play lists? - How does the MC get the crowd pumped? Its important to see how your MC can read a crowd and get them pumped and wanting to get up and dance - Do they have any showcases coming up that you can see them perform at? - Do they have sample mixes you can hear?
VERY IMPORTANT!!! Have they played at your wedding venue before? This is extremely important to ask, because sound travels differently in different venues. Have you ever been to a wedding where the music was SOOOO loud at your table and you were like 'omg this DJ really sucks?' well thats because the DJ didn't work there before and didn't know that the sound in certain areas of some rooms will not travel appropriately. So ask if they played at your venue before

For us Personality was paramount for our DJ decision. So I would recommend asking if they can guarantee in the Contract Who you will have as MC and DJ day of. If its not written down don't consider it a guarantee. And if you don't get a choice in MC or DJ do they at least arrange for you to meet with the ones you will have day of prior to?
