Questions for people who crochet/knit

Questions for people who crochet/knit

I would like to learn how to crochet/knit, either, both.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is and how I can go about teaching myself, recommend a book or something?

I would prefer to teach myself than take a class.

Thanks

Crocheting only involves one hook, and I believe knitting is two. I actually taught myself how to crochet, I bought a book from Michaels, and cheap yarn, it was hard a first, but with practice, its easy. But I only know how to make scarves and blankets!

I learned how to crochet only a month ago & I am almost done with my first blanket...I think the best way to learn is to have someone that knows the basics show you...I tried first by the book & I was so confused...Once my best friend showed me, I was able to read the book & get more ideas....Good luck!

Thanks for your help. I don't think I know anyone that crochets or knits.

Do you have a book to recommend? TIA

My mom just taught me how to knit. I'm trying to jnit a scarf at the moment. That's all I know how to do for now. I'm going to be checking out Michaels to see if they have any classes. I would also like to know how to crochet too.

Re: Questions for people who crochet/knit

I just learned both knitting and crocheting in December! At first it is very hard and awkward, but with practice it becomes faster and easier. For me, crocheting is a lot faster and is easier to fix mistakes. Trying the different crochet stitches is easier for me than the knitting ones.. it can get confusing. I have a few books but sometimes the diagrams are hard to understand. If you do a search online you can find videos showing you how to knit/crochet. Those were more helpful to me than the books.
So far I made a sweater for my dog, a few scarves and a few hats.
Good Luck!

do I sense a crocheting GTG coming on? Come on, let's all get a jump start on being old ladies together!

I'm loving crocheting! I hope to finish my blanket soon so that I can start a capelet! Lion Brand has some nice patters on their site. I have to get my mother to help me read them!

I know you mentioned you would rather not take a class but in case you look into it, they have these 1 time classes at Michael's that might be helpful (if you don't have someone to show you the basics). I agree that for starters the books can sometimes confuse you

I taught myself how to knit... two books that helped me were knitting for dummies and Kids Knit -it is actually a kid's knitting book-but the directions were written out so simply!!! I took both books out from the libray.. the kids one was in the childrens section!

I downloaded instructions off the internet. They were a little confusing, but I found them easier than a book my grandmother gave me.

I never really have had the patience for crocheting, andI find knitting much easier. Don't know why, but everyone in my family ALWAYS crocheted. my great-grandma used to make all sorts of little sweater/hat/bootie sets for cabbage patch kids. I can't seem to get the hang of it...but I haven't tried in a long time.

I hear the book Stitch N'B i t c h is pretty good for knitters, but I am not one of those people who can learn from books. Two friends helped me learn to knit and crochet. A professional lesson really helped with the crochet, though.
