Question...when you look at other people's registry...
And see 'expensive' stuff, does it make you want to run out and expensive stuff to yours?
See, I started my registry with some basic stuff (Kitchen Aid, vases, etc) b/c we were having an e-party. I anticipate adding to it probably in Dec or Jan. FH and I are not lavish people, heck we don't even know where were going to live after the wedding. But I know there are things I like (ie: Kate Spade china, Calvin Klein and Hotel Coll. Sheets, etc) but would not have the heart to buy myself (I am a giver, I love buying for others).
Now, FH's friend is getting married in July, we're not invited (to my knowledge) but I wanted to get them a gift, so I checked out their registry at Macy's and it has Calvin Klein Sheets, Donna Karen Sheets, Kate Spade dishes, Calvin Klein table linens, etc.
Not that this is wrong or bad, but it made me second-guess my registry. Am I thinking too practically? The china I picked out (it was a toss up-and still is-between 2) is by Nikko, at $69/5pc place setting. The one I really want is $119/5 pc place setting.
What would you do? Be practical (for guests sake) or put on what you want?
Thanks!!

I say this is probably the only time in your life you will have an opportunity to recieve gifts like this. Put what you want on there. If you odon't get it then you don't get it. It is very unlike that in 10 years you are going to go out and buy china. I say go for it!

When we did our registries, FH and I said, what the heck, if no one else buys it at least we have coupons and a discount to buy it cheaper ourselves.

Re: Question...when you look at other people's registry...
Personally I think you have to kinda meet in the middle. Put some more expensive stuff on your registry because you will be surprised at what some people give. Some people want to chip in so they want a bigger ticket item, some want to do a few smaller items.
And remember at the end, you will get 10% off to complete your registry. Plus I had to return about $400 worth of stuff that was doubles or I didnt need/want.
But dont go expensive on everythign unless you know all your guests can afford it simply because I have a friend and nothing was cheap on her registry and in the end she got very little from her registry.

I think you should look at your guest list and make sure you have things that they can all comfortably afford.
I registered for some expensive things, but not everything was pricey.
I also had a friend who had a HUGE registry with expensive crystal and sterling silver flatware and she got SO much of it because she had two showers and her DH's family was a little more well off and wanted to give her a $500 shower gift!

I agree and this is exactly what I did. As far as appliances I would rarely use (blender, coffee maker, assorted grills, etc) I made them very basic and affordable. Even towels which I didn't want a specific brand, I picked a basic plush set.
BUT...
I drew the line when it came to my china. I picked the $119/5 pc setting over the $69 setting just because I felt that I wanted a certain china pattern. Do I think I'm going to get all my place-settings? NO WAY. But at least I'll get the 10% off in the end to buy it myself.

I think that you should register for what you want. People will buy what they can afford.
While I think I have mostly affordable things on mine, I do have a few expensive items - Ralph Lauren sheets, expensive pots, luggage and a vacumn cleaner. People may chip in for a group gift, or maybe I just won't get them!
I say go for it - you have nothing to lose.

I agree - register for what you want, and then look at your registry to make sure you have a good blend, and it sounds like you do. People will chip in for group gifts, or if they don't like your registry, and they're anything like my family, they'll get you cash.

Re: Question...when you look at other people's registry...
We put on things we really wanted, no matter what the price was. We have things that are really inexpensive (our everyday dishes come to about $35 a place setting), to the really expesnive (professional kitchen aid mixer I think is close to $400). But we picked the things we really wanted and would use. Our fine china is over $100 per place setting, but it's what we really like, and you know what? When are you going to get a chance to buy yourself such nice things? Only for the wedding and after 9with registry completion coupons!) will we ever be able to justify such an expense. And some people like to spend a little more. i already ahve 4 palce settings of my fine china and $140 platter from the fine china, so people will buy things in thier price range. Some people bought us $40 coffee pots, other peple expensive stuff. put what you realy realistically want and really realistically will use. I don't think you need to put only inexpesnive stuff 'in consideration for' your guests because you're not forcing them to buy it. There will be less expsnsive items on the registry they cna buy or they can always give cash or go off the registry (which is why it's good to keep a wide variety of stuff ON the registry)

I would register for the things you really want. I made sure I had a some expensive things that I really wanted and knew I would never buy myself, and some stuff that was more practical. I know a lot of people will go in on gifts that are more expensive. So put the stuff you really want. Don't just put expensive things on there to have them. If you really want them go for it.

Re: Question...when you look at other people's registry...
I think FH and I are simple... We didn't register for China or Crystal. We know we wouldn't use it. Instead we registered for fabulous dishes that we're going to use as our 'special dishes'. Plus I have tons of my Mom's China & Crystal & Silver. Things we splurged on was a great set of knives and bakeware.

i did the same thing. i didnt register for expensive things b/c i didnt want people to HAVE to spend alot and i didnt want them to think i was 'spoiled'. i did a mixture of both, with nothing extravagant

I agree. Just make sure to have plenty of things for purchase in all price ranges.

Register for what you want. As long as you have a good price range. Some people even will go in on a gift if it is expensive.

Re: Question...when you look at other people's registry...
I am having an e-party this summer, so I put on some practical things just in case people get us gifts - not that I am expecting it. Plus, I thought it would be smarter to start with the things I really need and want first, rather than put on $150 per setting china that I will probably never use, and have no place to store. But I intend to put on more pricey stuff, cause like some of the girls said, this may be your only chance, and if you don't get it, oh well.

I think the main thing is that you have items with a range of prices. Put some more expensive things down, definitely, but also have plenty of items in the $20-40 range and you should be fine.

Re: Question...when you look at other people's registry...
I think that if it's something you really love, you should put it on your registry. I wouldn't put expensive stuff on just because you can.If you know that you're not going to use it, I think it's a waste. People are going to spend what they're going to spend. I don't think they care if theyre buying one high priced item, or two smaller priced items.
