Quick question

Quick question

I know you need your birth certificate to get a passport and your marriage license.

My thing is my birth certificate is barely holding together, and someone said I should get a new one. Then I would be able to use the original to get the passport, and while that is processing, use the new one to get the marriage license.

Where do I go to get a new birth certificate? Someone said there's an office in the DMV that can do this? And the passport has to be filed through the post office? I just want to be sure I have everything correct before I go running around.

TIA

I am not sure about the new birth cert. but I do know that you can file for the passport at the post office. You might want to check on where you can take the photo though. Not all post offices take the phot for you. The passposrt process takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks

Easier than going to the DMV -
If it's 'convenient' for you - go to the town hall of whatever city you were born in. They will give you a copy of your birth certificate. I think it costs around $10.

For a new birth ceritifcate - you have to go to the offices of vital records.

It's really quick and easy. I couldn't find mine so I ordered a new copy (it's more expensive than I thought it would be though, it's like $60).

I think you have to request it from the hall of records where you were born.

I had to fill out an application and mail it to Sacramento (I was born in CA) to get a new copy of my birth certificate.

If you go to the vital records website for the state you were born instructions should be there.

Re: Quick question

I have to call the Dept. of Health since I was born in Brooklyn. They need the name of the hospital you were born in, and mine changed names over the years. So I don't know whether to put the old name or the new name.

But thanks all for your quick replies!! I think I'm going to use the original for the passport since I need that ASAP and the new one for the marriage license.
