Thanks, I will =) Do you know if he works with a catholic deacon? I've been looking everywhere for a good rabbi/deacon and I've had terrible luck...so I'm really hoping it works out =)

Can you try your parish for a deacon? The deacon at my parish has been great

I tried going through my parish but since we are having the ceremony outside, he said that he couldn't do it for us. So, I need to find a deacon that will.

Being that he agreed to do our Buddhist-Jewish wedding (albeit he took a double take at us when we told him) - I would say he was pretty darn liberal!!!!

Well, ideal for us would be a rabbi who will do it on shabbt in a church!
With the deacon, did he say he woudnlt do it outside a church, roi he woudlnlt do it outdoors? My deacon said 'all bets are off' when it's a non-catholic involved

The deacon said he would do it outside the church but not outdoors. Actually, most of them say that b/c technically they aren't allowed to do it-but some of the more liberal deacons will.

Re: Rabbi Alan Stein
My situation is this, my FH would love to have a Rabbi marry us. But I am not jewish, although my father is. I was not brought up under any religion. We celebrated what I used to tell my friends was the 'fun holidays'...Christmas, Easter...but to me they never signified religious beliefs - they were just reasons to get together with the family. FH's family would be much happier if I was jewish - but since I will not convert, (they are not religious AT ALL and if they were I might have thought about it) I figure the least we could do was be married by a Rabbi. Soooo...I think I will contact Rabbi Stein!
Sorry I went off topic a bit!

sorry to butt in on this thread, but as a cantor, i thought i could help out a little... unfortunately for your situation--life cycle events are prohibited on shabbat... the closest you could get to a rabbi or cantor performing your wedding on the sabbath would be on a saturday evening... (many reform jewish clergy are less strict about that part...)
as for doing it in a church.... that depends on the individual clergy person....
good luck!

Re: Rabbi Alan Stein
Rabbi Stein is officiating our wedding on a bright, sunny Saturday afternoon!!!
One of the few Rabbis who will do shabbat!!!
Of course, my Jewish family is saying that means he is not a REAL Rabbi - but hey - he can make us official, and he'll satisfy the Jew thing for my folks - I'm happy!!!

I know they're prohibited, but some rabbis and cantors will do it anyway... it will make our lives so much easier...I know it's not the best way to do it, but...
You attend/ed HUC right? My friend is finishing up her application as we speak

Thanks so much. I'll let her know. I really think she'll get in. I don't know what their admission requirements are, but I really think she has everything it takes to be a great rabbi...so I'm for her
