The summit between FW's family (in for Thanksgiving from OOT) and mine went fairly well. And her parents like the shul and our caterer.
But this weekend, we were driving around Smithtown and Happaugue looking at hotels and it occured to me: it's pretty desolate out there. Not only that, but there's NOTHING within walking distance of the hotels. Unless you count the LIE and gas stations.
HOLY CRAP! What are people going to do with themselves?! I'm a New Yorker, and a bit of an environmentalist, I didn't want tons of people to have to rent cars or drive all over the place. Is renting a party bus or two for the days just too much?
And this speaks to another question: for any smithtown locals, are there fun things to do around/nearby? HELP!
thanks for reading.

Re: rant: my own first real moment of panic
We live out that way. there's is definitely nothing in walking distance. There are a lot of stores and restaurants & stuff up & down Rt. 347 (i.e. mall, etc.). Although it is a bit out of the way, my family likes to go into Port Jefferson (to see the shops, ferry, etc.) when they come to visit. when my family comes they will etiher drive or rent cars, because there is no way to get around out this way. best wishes. fm if you want more ideas

I grew up out that way and my recommendation is to direct them to Port Jefferson down by the water. It's very quaint - lots of shops and little seafood places. Danbury's restaurant is there and they have a great brunch.

Re: rant: my own first real moment of panic
Why not put them up at a hotel in NY and rent a shuttle van to transport them from the hotel to the wedding then from the wedding back to the hotel. Or if you're going to put them up at a hotel in long island why not shop around for one that offers free shuttle rides to certain destinations.

I'm not a Suffolk person so I can't help much but I must say, my very favorite chain restaurant, Carrabba's, is in Smithtown. LOVE that place!! I'd suggest that in a heartbeat!! I wish I lived closer to a Carrabba's!

FIrst, I'm a born/raised Smithtown Gal and its not that bad ladies. Anyway there hotels that are near walking distance to places. The Three Village Inn in Stonybrook is right across the street from the Village Shops. There Danfords in Port Jefff.
Now personally even if you dont want them to rent cars or shuttle those hotels are going to cost more money than gas. I wouldn't stress over this and remind yourself that most hotels (Big ones) have a rest., bar, etc on premise.

definitely good ideas. We're thinking about those things; most of the hotels seem reticent to do shuttles to anything aside from the airport and the LIRR.

Never been to one! And to think, between the Yankees, Q104.3, Ani DiFranco we had so much in common. Sounds tasty, what kind of food is it?
Kerrycec, how far is Stonybrook from Smithtown? And as a local, do you have any other awesome recommendations?
You ladies all rock. thank you!

Re: rant: my own first real moment of panic
I had the same problem with my guests. FH is from Florida and all of his family is flying up for the wedding (over 50 people!)
I spoke to them all and asked them if they'd rather be closer to the wedding or the city. They unanimously said CITY. They're all going to stay in hotels by the airports or near the city, which may not be as picturesque as long island, but have great transportation and lots more to do. We're just going to rent a party bus for the day of the wedding and transport everyone back and forth.

Thanks. Seeing as my FW is a teacher, and I'm in front of a computer all day, I'm taking a fairly active role in this whole thing. It's fun, but I've also got a few more gray hairs.

Still sorting. Your info was incredibly helpful! Also found a page put together by some 'knotties' who are also on liweddings. http://www.geocities.com/budgetvendors/
FW knows the ladies on liweddings are no joke. Whenever she teases me wedding stuff, I casually remind her that many of you would gladly remind her how lucky she is I'm helping out with this stuff.
Out of curiousity, Heather, what's the package you're going with from ADA?

I love the stores on Smithtown, but I know there isn't a whole to do there. Try to direct them Port Jefferson or Northport. I love walking up and down Main Street in Northport, and theres a lot to do. Port Jeff, is great too theres lots to do there

Re: rant: my own first real moment of panic
Port jefferson has several quaint inns, as well as danfords ($$$), and another less expensive motel (forgot name despite driving by it daily!)... they could at any of those, and remain within walking distance to starbucks / bakeries / toast breakfast place / shops / restuarants / movies.....
smithtown, northport, and huntington would also be good, although I'm not sure of inns or hotels in each of those towns that are near main st.....
Also, like already mentioned, stony brook village (three village inn) may be another option....
Being port jeff folk, we're obviously housing everyone over here for our wedding.......
