Is it necessary to have a rehersal dinner if you aren't having a wedding rehersal the evening before?

We are not having a rehearsal the night before, but are still doing the dinner - just because it'll be nice to have everybody together once before the wedding, and we can give out gifts etc...
but, it's totally not necessary, I know people who have not had them, so it's up to you!

We are not doing one. My parents are paying for practically the whole wedding (and his side has more people than mine!), plus they payed for our engagement party and my very expensive bridal shower. They are drawing the line at a dinner the night before the wedding. We are not having a rehersal, so I don't think it is necessary.
