RD dilemma...need opinions (XP BHB)

My church is out in the Smithtown area. About half of people who will be attending the RD is from southwest suffolk.

My FMIL called me to say that she started looking for places and suggested some really nice restaurants but they are on the south shore on the water. She said she wants something with a nice view. That's fine and I totally appreciate her efforts, but my RD is at night in November. The bigger issue is to get to these restaurants is an easy 30-40 minute ride from the church.

I think the dinner should be closer to the church. I think it's a lot to ask people to drive all the way out to the church and then another 30 minutes for dinner. FH does not see what the big deal is, considering the restaurants she is considering would bring half the people closer to home anyway.

I totally appreciate that she is looking at really nice places for the RD and I'm not trying to be a brat. We are not paying for it so we don't have a say at all, but we can certainly make suggestions.

What do you think? Also, can you make any recommendations that can accomodate 50-60 people in the Smithtown area?

I don't think its a problem at all if it's bringing half the people closer to home. so for half..the church is closer and for the other half...the dinner is closer. I think it works out fine.

I had the same problem with our RD! FH wanted to go to a place in Stony Brook (not that nice of a place either) and didn't understand why I didn't want out guests driving there (our church is in Hauppauge) We had a big fight about it, until his mother finally told him that it wasn't a nice place!!! Thank goodness. It was kinda difficult to find a place within FILs price range and someplace that would hold 50 people on a Friday night. We ended up booking Olio's in Commack. Great guys to work with. Have you tried Old Street in Smithtown? We looked at some other places in Hauppauge- FM me for me info. Good luck!

our church is in Seaford/Bethpage and our dinner is in Jericho.

it'll be a drive and out of the way, but it's the place FMIL wanted, so we went with it.

Yeah, I'm thinking since I'm not paying for it and she wants to do a nice RD, I should just be grateful and butt out.

Free food + open bar = will suck it up and travel

I went with my FMIL's invites & RD place. I'm not crazy about either: BUT: it makes her happy. My advice: just let it go. 30 mins is not a big deal.

My FMIL did the same thing. My church is near my house and the restaurant is near my In-laws house about a 1/2 hour away. I just let it go....its probably one of the only thing she can control throughout the whole wedding process.

I can sympathize with that one! My church is in East Northport and FMIL refused to even look at anything that wasn't within 5 minutes of her house so we have our BP driving from Plainview, to Northport back to Hicksville on a Thursday night isn't she sweet @#$%$%#^&!!

It'll work out I understand if it was in the opposite direction from the church but half way home isn't too bad, its just the time of day thats going to get a bit messy.
Have you spoken to FMIL about it yet and try to talk to her about somewhere else?

We're having the same problem. Our church is in Islip and FMIl picked a place thats like 25 minutes away for thr RD....which takes people over 35 minutes away from the hotel we're staying in. I just dont understand why she feels the need to inconvenience people. But.....the fight just isnt worth it anymore, so i gave up and gave in.
