RD room deposit -- is this normal?

So, FFIL called tonight to say that the restuarant he wanted to book for the RD said that he can leave a deposit for the party room, but since we're only a group of 25, if they get a party of more requesting the room for that night, they're going to give the deposit back and put us at a regular table!!! I feel like theres not even a point to a deposit then! I'm really upset right now because I dont want to be giving speaches and handing out gifts in the middle of the restaurant -- I really wanted that room so it could be more intimate. Is it normal, or even acceptable for a restaurant to tell you this? What would you do?

Well.. my mom and I looked at a couple of places for my shower and they said somethign similar to us.. we looked at 2 catering halls actually.. they just wouldn't even take a deposit since they said if a a wedding booked they couldn't give us the room... i can understand, they can't set aside half the room for 60 people when they could possibly book a wedding w/ 300 people.. but I still think its rude.. what are people supposed to do.. wait until the last minute?? I feel your pain haha but unfortunately there is nothing to be done about it. I'd look elsewhere or maybe wait a little while.. you still have a lot of time to book a rehearsal dinner.
