re: Bounced Check as a Gift ?????

OKay so we received a check as a gift for our engagement party from the friend / roommate of FH's cousin (the cousin who is in the wedding party). He gave a us a $50 check and we deposited it about a month and a half after we received it......now the check bounced and the bank charged us $60!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do I do????????

Forgot to put in that the check was in his mother's name and he doesn't live at home anymore and he is 23, so I don't know if his mother told him about it.

I know I should be the bigger person and let it go....but now I feel like he came to my e-party ate food, drank....basically didn't give a gift and I paid him $60 to come along!

This has NOT been my week. I want to trade it in for the next one.

oh damn that su.cks... i'm sorry... that's really hard to say to someone... and it's not like you can casually bring it up in conversation.. lol... sorry to hear about that... maybe have FH say something...

Usually, you should call the person to make sure that they have enough fund in the account. If you give someone a check you forget about it after the first two weeks.

I know but he gave us a check that wasn't in his name...it was his mothers. And we don't really know him that well we met him in April....I've never met his family or anything like that....he is just FH's cousins roommate and we invited him b/c we are close to the cousin and he is in our wedding party.

wow, i didn't even know that banks charged fees when you DEPOSITED a returned check. that seems unfair--how are you supposed to protect yourself against that?

as far as the guest's hand in the whole thing, i know i personally get impatient when someone takes a long time to cash a check i've given as a gift bc it means i have to keep factoring it in every time i do my banking. there have been instances in the past where a REALLY long time went by, so the check got lost in the shuffle, and i was the one who got to pay bank fees. obviously that's my error, but i think it's important to cash them soon after as a matter of courtesy.

you guys probably shouldnt have waited that long to cash/deposit the check either, sometimes people forget, and then it messes them up.
