My Fh liked the idea of throwing the garter to a single person, b/c he has a lot of young single friends, I, on the otherhand, do not. So it would be literally 3 of my friends and then FHs 13 year old nieces. And I said imagine one of your friends had to put a garter on your niece's leg.
If I were younger I might have, but now I like the idea of the anniversary dance. Where the longest couple gets the bouquet...my mother and I have already figured it out. It would be her neighbor of 40 years.
Your husband will remove the garter from your leg and then toss it to all the single men. The one who catches it will put it on the leg of the single woman who caught your boquet.
I know I have some girls who are really looking to catch my boquet and who are quite competitive (I used to play women's rugby with some of them) so it should be interesting....maybe you'll see it one day on Americas Funniest Videos one day.
The garter toss can be alot of fun and entertaining but you need to have single people to go out there and catch it.
We unfortunately do not have lots of single friends left so we are not going to do it....Guess that's what happens as you get older. We will probably do the anniversary thing. My single girlfriends have started thanking me for not doing the garter toss. They hate it b/c as we get older the crowd is getting less and less and they hate drawing attention to it. lol
I'm not doing it, but my friend did- funny thing was two cousins (yep blood related) caught the bouquet and garter - so to fend off any embarresment- they blindfolded the garter catcher and the bride's brother (who is kind of a nut)stood in for the bouquet catcher - took off his shoes and socks- boy was the guy putting the garter on surprised when the blindfold was removed! COme to think of it, it was embarrassing for the guy- but it was funny for the rest of us. He was good natured about it though.
Why did you decide not to have it?
when I was younger, I always looked forward to it, but after I hit about 27 and was still single, I hated going up there, I literally used to hide!! Also there are very few single people at my wedding, except for teenage nieces who will literally fight over the bouqet if its tossed. You can just present the bouquet to the person you want to have it these days, although I like the idea of presenting it to the person who's been married the longest as well!
the 'longest married couple' dance and gave the bouquet to them! It gets harder because either there are hardly any single people or the ones that are, won't go up! Much easier this way, nobody gets embarrassed and believe me, I've been on that end too many times. And not for nothing but I caught that thing 4 times before and I firmly believe it's a jinx because I didn't end up getting married until years after the fact! ;)
We too didnt do this, however we modified it a little. We had the Anniversary Dance, and my great aunt/uncle were the longest married couple-50 YEARS!!!! So, my uncle put the garter on my aunt, and I gave my throw away bouquet to my aunt. It was a BIG HIT!!! At least they knew each other :)
Thank you... I thought I was the only one doing it!!! LOL
