Re-post: Engagement/Housewarming party

I want to have an engagement/housewarming party this summer. My mom hosted a mini one last summer (15 people max) and gifts were given from my immediate family.

At this one, I do not want gifts and will not be asking for any. I just want people to come and celebrate our engagement and new home. Besides those who came last summer, I want to invite FH's family and our friends who were not able to come last summer. Would this be a good idea?

I don't want to start planning anything because I'm not sure how this will be taken. Also, my mom was the one who gave me the idea for this party, so I know she'll be able to help out. What do you think?

Maybe you could incorporate it into a holiday party ...like Memorial Day or July 4th, and just tell everyone to bring dessert or something small if they ask.....This way they will able to see your new house, I'm sure the talk of the party will be about your engagement, wedding etc..., and you'll be together for the holiday to celebrate that as well.....Its not as obvious as just inviting everyone over for a get together because they might feel obligated to bring a gift (even though its not an 'official' housewarming, engagament party)...Congrats on the new home though..we just closed on our last week...so I might be doing something very similar
