Re: reader question
we just asked them- I did make a card for one of them just because I felt like it---it was my MOH's husband who happens to also be DH's friend..
No gifts though... I didnt think about until I came on LIW and when I mentioned it to my mom she said she had been a reader in MANY weddings and never received a gift-
MOH's wedding was one month before mine and she did not get her readers gifts, so I didnt think they would expect it - none of our readers would expect it... if you have the extra $$ and desire, maybe a bottle of wine, a Book store gift certificate (reader), a frame with a wedding pic with you and them...

Re: reader question
I have 2 friends being readers. One of them is my best friend in NY and should be a BM, but didn't want o cause drama with other friends who are not BMs. So she said she would still be as involved as a BM but it is better not to have her as one. And the other is also a good friend who wants to be inolved. So I asked if they would mind doing a reading because I want them to have a special part in the actual wedding. They said they would be glad to do it. I think having someone read is a great way to involve special people. And I am intending on getting them something- maybe the same thing I get my BMs.

Re: reader question
My cousin is doing a reader at our ceremony. I just got her a cute necklace from overstock.com as a gift.
