reading about puppy mills

I've been up all night reading the links (below) that people have provided for info about pet store pups and puppy mills. What a horrible industry.

There are puppy mills with so many dogs in cages that they do not even notice when a dog dies and starts to decompose in the cage with the others!

If you are interested in a specific breed, some good advice I read is to go to a dog show and talk to the people associated with the breed. They will tell you a lot and may know good breeders.

ALso, if you want a pup, be leary if you have no way to meet the mother. In puppy mills, the mothers suffer the most and are left on the farm to continue to reproduce long after each litter is removed.

I have friends with great pet store pups, so I don't mean to preach. I'm just learning about some of this and wanted to share it.

I didnt do that preparation before shopping around for a puppy. And turns out we bought Peanut (an 11 week old Pomeranian). Per the Puppy Store we had to get her vet checked w/in 48 hrs. So we did. But we had to take her to 'their vet'. Well, I knew something wasnt right because Peanuts poop had blood! I mentioned it when I tooj her to the vet and they did a stool sample. They found nothing! So since it hadnt gone away I took her to my vet and sure enough she had a puppy parasite. We were able to treat it with an atibiotic and se was fine within a week.

Then we noticed sometimes she had trouble breathing. So, back to the vet we went. Turned out she had a collapsing trachea. Lucky for us she grew out of it...and now only does it when she feels like she isnt getting enough attention!

All in all, after I had all these problems I contacted New12 LI to find out if theyve ever had complaints before. Turns out where I bought her from was shut down for some reason and reopened supposedly under 'new ownership'. The vet told me she probably came from a puppy mill and we are lucky she is as healthy as she is now!

Now Peanut is 10 months old and probably one of the healthiest puppies around, but still it pisses me off what kind of life she came from!

The best part is when you share it with others, maybe if everyone knows, puppy mills will become obsolete.

Did you get her from Yuppy Puppy? I think that's one store that was given tons of bad press, then opened under new ownership.

Oh, another thing that is common with some mill breeders is to debark the breeder dogs by jamming a metal pipe down the throat and breaking the vocal chords. No, they don't all do this, but it does go on!

YOU'RE KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!! now i feel horrible cause i go in there looking at puppies all the time (just to look though whenever i'm in pt jeff)

now i don't think i'll even do that, that is so horrible

btw, i'm so glad i started reading about these things before i got my pup. i am getting him from a breeder which still isn't as great as adopting, but i really wanted a cockapoo and i want to raise the little guy. anyways, before i wouldn't have had a problem getting one from a pet store, but now i know better. but i'm going to have to not go into these stores anymore cause one day i might just fall in love and not be able to help myself

Azad... yeah, its sad. thats why sometimes they have such great 'deals' before i knew about puppymills and i had JUST started looking for a minpin i called them and they had some for $350?!!?! i knew something was wrong!
Don't feel bad about not adopting him. Adopting is great, but sometimes you have your heart set on something very in particular.
