is it rude not to have one? it is such a time-saver to skip a receiving line (we want to finish pics to make it to the cocktail hour)...but there are people who are going to come to the church that are not invited to the wedding, and i would feel a little rude not at least stopping for a hello, thanks for coming. i wish i could have one where JUST the people not coming to the reception could stop, but not everyone else. what do you guys think? are receiving lines necessary?

Re: receiving line...
I am not doing a receiving line! I figure I can meet and greet at the cocktail hour! BTW: my ceremony is on site so the cocktail hour is right after the ceremony. I am going back to the bridal room for like 10mins to get busled and refreshed!

Re: receiving line...
i will be doing it as our guest list is around 100 people. it does get tricky with a lot of people, however i do think it is important to be able to thank each guest individually at some point. it can be at the church or the reception...in form of a line or table rounds...

oh, i totally want to thank everyone individually, i can do that at the reception though. i am more concerned about people who come to the church (like neighbors or friends of my parents) who aren't invited to the reception.

That's what I was thinking - just the two of us, no BP - the line will move much faster that way.

Re: receiving line...
i think it is ok as long as you are out of sight when the guests are leaving the church. i went to a friend's wedding and she didn't have a receiving line because of the time constraint but after the mass she waited in a room with her bridal party at the back of the church for the guests to exit. well the room had a glass wall and you could see her in there. i thought it looked horribly rude because she was obviously just standing there waiting for the guests to leave. i don't think she realized that people were watching her. so as long as you don't do that, and you go around to say hello to everyone at the reception then i think it's perfectly fine to skip the receiving line.

Re: receiving line...
I didn't have one because I was concerned with taking my photos in the daylight. I was married in November and had a late service/reception start time.
I had the priest make a brief announcement after the service and I made sure we went around to everyone's table to say hello and thank them for coming and I also had a receiving line at the end of the evening.
My parents thought it was rude that we did not have one at the church but oh, well....I wanted my pics.

Re: receiving line...
I didnt tell my parents yet cause I know they will flip, but we dont want one either. I would rather go visit tables during the reception since FI doesnt dance anyway - will be a way to get him up and around. Plus our church is small and I am afraid it will run really long and be cramped. We will see - I guess.

Re: receiving line...
I plan on doing an abbreviated receiving line with just us and our parents to help speed things up. To me, it's an opportunity to see everyone and say hi and thank you to them, without being stuck going around to each table individually. My sister went to everyone's table and she never got to eat her food or dance. I want to eat AND dance! :o)

Re: receiving line...
my friends jsut styaed outside the church fora little why, , not a foraml recieveing lien, so then you could jsut go up to te peopel who are leaving.
I liekr eceiving lines, becaue there is so much goingon a the reception, its a whiel before you can talkt the coupel & sometimes as a guest I feel like I'm drinking & eating all the stuff they provide, yet & haven't even said congratulations yet- I feel kinda rude.

Re: receiving line...
We're not having one because our mass ends at 12 and the reception, which is 20 minutes away, starts at 12:30.
