I just received our renewal letter from PETRO they raised our heating oil by $.20 per gal. They are a great company. I would like to stay with them but that sounds high to me. Has anyone recently signed with an oil company for less?

You may be able to shop around for a little less, but you'll probably get a lot less in service too. Petro has been great for us in terms of coming to the rescue within a few hours when we've had problems with our system and they even went the extra mile to fix a problem with the hot water that wasn't technically covered by our contract. The tech told us that the policy is that if they see a problem that can be fixed in under an hour, and it's NOT part of the contract, go ahead and fix it anyway!
A few weeks back, Newsday had an article about heating your home and they were quoting an oil company that was telling customers who were out of oil that they weren't scheduled till the following week, and to go get a kerosene heater until then Others just couldn't make the deliveries because they couldn't get the oil.

Re: Recent Oil Prices PETRO wants $1.599
I just called on Thursday to get prices for my boss, they gave me a quote for 1.499 for a year contract with free maintence on his boiler b/c it was 2 years old. The representive I spoke to said that they could do a vairable contract which was $1.599 and then in the spring when the prices drop down lock it in there. Right now my boss has Meenan an he pays 1.399 but he has been locked into that rate for 2 years now.

I locked in with Petro for 129.9 back in december but my one complaint is that they come too often to deliver. I have a huge tank and would prefer if they only came monthly.

They usually fill our tank every 3-4 weeks, and it's only about half empty when the come to fill it. Right now, it's about a quarter full - probably due to the colder weather, so I was planning to call on Monday to find out when they are coming since I don't want it to run down too low.
You might want to call them and let them know you don't need them so often. Since you just signed on, they may be trying to get an average on your usage over a period of time and are erring on the safe side so you don't run out.

As a general rule, you are always in a better position to negotiate oil contracts in the summertime, when it is not as 'urgent.' With that in mind, you could ask for a more competitive rate now, and Petro should be able to do better. We had a technician tell us to ALWAYS contest the first price we are offered! Then, come summertime you can threaten to drop them as your oil company unless they re-negotiate your price before the winter.

Re: Recent Oil Prices PETRO wants $1.599
Thanks everyone I definately learned a few things here.
1. If you have a good rate and are at the end of your contract Call and schedule a delivery before you contract is up. I have a 1/4 tank of oil right now and I am going to have pay the higher rate on my next delivery
2. They will move a little. I got them down to $1.549 but did not lock in at that rate. I can lock in any time.
3. PETRO is really slow with paperwork and accounting. They could not tell me if my service contract was up or how much I would be billed if anything for another year.
4. Its sort of dialing for dollars. I called twice, spoke to two different 'pricing specialist' and got 2 different prices.
