reception cost

reception cost

Am I crazy for wanting to have my wedding @ Gurney's with a price tag of 140 pp plus tax and gratuity? Granted, it's a great package with cake, champagne, dessert, 4 courses, and a cocktail hour that is so comprehensive, we won't need to add any extras at all. We can have the ceremony there for $1000, and it's open bar w/ top shelf for 5 hours. All told, for the 100 guests we're planning on, it works out to about $17,500 for the reception alone with tax and tip. This figure scares me, lol.

Honestly, I don't seem to have a lot of people around me who've planned a 'big' wedding, and getting information about the reception cost from vendors is like pulling teeth. We're paying for it ourselves, so cost is something to be considered. I'm just not sure what 'average' is, and what makes a good price or a bad price.

it doesn't matter what the average is, what others are paying. What matters is that you are comfortable with the price, if you're not then don't do it bc its what others normally pay

you're not crazy if its affordable for YOU. We spent what we could afford. For some people they thought we were crazy for spending what we did. For others, what we spent was half their wedding budget.

to each his own.

Re: reception cost

you're not crazy. i wanted a 'beachy' wedding at first and I loved the idea of Gurney's because it would be like a whole weekend getaway, but my fiance was not into it. Then I looked at the Crescent Beach Club but refused to pay that (about the same - $140 - $150, and that was for a daytime wedding). But it's all about your priorities - we don't want to spend a lot on the wedding even though we could afford to - we'd rather splurge on the honeymoon and save for a house. all these places required minimums which was screwing us up so we decided on a day wedding which has a lower minimum # of people and is a little less formal. That's a lot for a reception but you can save money elsewhere... if that's where you really love. I honestly had no problem just calling places and asking their prices over the phone - they dont' want to waste time either.

If it's in your budget, go for it.

People will tell you it's too much -- don't listen. My sister thinks spending $2K on a band is expensive... and we will probably end up paying over $3000 in actuality. But, she had some luxuries for her wedding that I thought were a waste of money too. It's all depends on what you loike and want and what you want to spend your money on most! For me, scrimping on flowers and other items is worth it because I'll have extra money for the thing we want most, the band.

Up to YOU!

I agree with the others, it's not crazy if you are comfortable with the price. Every person's idea of what is big or expensive is different.

FH and I are paying for our wedding ourselves and we decided buying a house was more important than a big wedding, so our budget is $4,000 (not including the HM), 2 years ago my sister spent $30,000. It all depends on what you want and are comfortable with

You have to budget what is right for you.
If you can afford the 140pp, then go for it.

I really wanted to have my wedding in a certain venue, but when calculating the bottom line (adding in gratuity and tax), there was no way possible. I wasn't about to go into debt just to have a party. We settled on a location that is just as nice, but at half the cost. Granted, we booked for daytime, but because our guest list is large we had to make the concession to daytime. Quite a difference in the pp cost.

There are so many venues on Long Island that appeal to every price range.
You just have to find the one that is right for you.

What is expensive to one person may not be to others. It's all perspective and somehow when it comes to weddings, everyone wants to put their two sense in.

Do what you like and feel comfortable doing.

If you can afford it, then it is fine. My advice is to make a budget and stick to it. If you know you can spend lets say 30k then spend 30k. I have read of people going 10, 10, 30 k over their budget. You should not go into debt because of our wedding (JMO)

Re: reception cost

$17,500 is not an unusual number for a new york wedding. Some people may spend less, but others spend a lot more. If you can afford it, go for it. That is going to about the cost of my reception, probably a little more.

I see why it that number scares you though. Hehe. I am a little scared about my number too. But we are only getting married once!

It was a toss up for us between there (gurney's) and the Old Field Club. I LOVED Gurney's but felt that it would be a lot for our guests to come out to Montauk (especially since its the summer, and most hotels in the area are $$$ and require 2 or 3 night minimums).

Just something else to consider.

But I loved it there....and if you can afford it - go for it!!

I agree with everyone. You are NOT crazy for wanting the wedding of your dreams! We all do! So if you can afford it, then definitely do it. You only get married once and you don't want to regret it down the road if you go with somewhere that you don't absolutely LOVE!
