Reception Music List - How many Songs?

Are in a typical 4 hour reception? I'm getting my list together and need a rough idea of when to stop!

I think the average is 60 songs (20 per hour). You may want to confirm with your DJ.

Thrilled,
My suggestion is to let your band or dj use some of their own discretion. If they know what they are doing, they should be able to determine what songs will keep your crowd up & dancing. I don't think its such a great idea to plan the four hours yourlself. That is what you are paying your music people for. Of course, you can give a few suggestions and request some of your favorite songs, and its always good to pick ones that are meaningful to you, but you should also let your entertainers read your crowd and go with what they think will work for the party.

60 songs!! No wonder why these orchestras are so pricey!! I can't even karaoke for 2 hours without being hoarse

I agree with Octobergirl - tell them what songs you really want played - special dances, favorites, etc. and the songs you do NOT want played. Other then that, I would let them do their jobs. That's you are paying them

The DJ was a friend of ours.We told him what type of songs we want to play & let him use his own judgement. He did an excellent job.If they are good, they know what to play.

I made up a short do-not-play list, a short must-play list and then a long songs-we-like-but-use-your-discretion list.

The DJ asked us in advance if we wanted certain songs played so we told him a few things we definately did not want & a few things we definately wanted.

I am giving my DJ a must play and a do not play list but not too many must plays. If you hired a good DJ, you shouldn't have to worry about giving him a ton of must plays. Let him use his discretion, that's why you hired him in the first place

You are all right. We hired him because he did two family friend weddings and was excellent both times. He's a ham, too, which we like to a degree although there will be no sunglasses and leis.

I'm doing a must have list too- problem is- I love so many songs that my must have will probably take up the 4 hours!!!!
I say, make your list, and then ask their opinion.

How many slow songs do you think you want for the wedding? I was thinking of this last night?????

I have to agree with octobergirl. Do NOT make your 'play' list too rigid, or too many 'spotlight' dances or special dedications. It translates to a BORING party for your guests. I was at a wedding where the B&G had so many 'special' songs that all we did ALL night was watch them sing to each other and dance by themselves. *yawn*...falling asleep at my table instead of enjoying the party. Even the band was bored from all the soft rock.

You hire the band/DJ b/c of their expertise in entertaining. Give them a limited list of special songs, and then a list of songs that you absolutely DO NOT want played at the wedding. The rest is up to them.

we are telling our band a few of our favorite songs and some genre's and letting them feel the crowd
