Re: RECEPTION QUESTIONS

I see your name and I just got this email from one of my coworkers....I thought it was kinda of funny...

Subject: ...groooaannn!!

====================

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank....and the cargo was forever lost....

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery....were disconsolate at the loss....

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.... The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th.... and is known....of course....as Sinko de Mayo....

you could look at a hundred places and still not like anything or you could fall in love with the first place you go to. my fh and i went to three places altogether. good luck and keep an open mind! try to see places when they are having a party, too, to get an idea of what they reallllly look like! and congratulations!

Re: RECEPTION QUESTIONS

Congratulations! The most important questions to ask are 1) what is included in the price--for example, are they going to charge extra for valet? 2) what is the minimum you need to guarantee? On a Saturday night, many places require you to guarantee a minimum of 175-225 people. Sometimes this is negotiable. 3) if you have a lot of out of town guests, consider whether there is convenient and affordable lodging nearby. I originally wanted to get married in the Hamptons, but realized that my friends from college would not only have to pay a fortune to fly from California but they'd also have to do deal with trying to find a hotel in the Hamptons during the summer. 4) do a search on LIWeddings or theKnot to find out what other people's experiences have been at that particular reception hall. This helps immensely--I saw one venue that I really liked, posted asking for feedback, and found out that the food is awful (food is very important to us).

As for how many places you should look at, it really depends on whether you have a definite idea of what you're looking for. If you know you just *have* to get married on the water, that will limit your search. I looked at 30 places, some of which were so awful I couldn't believe it and some of which were beautiful but didn't work for me because I couldn't meet their minimum and it was really important to me that the wedding be on a Saturday. If you know what features you're looking for in a site, like if you know you want a mansion, etc., check out www.reception-halls.com. On that site, you can search for venues by a number of factors, such as if you want a place with an atrium. I think I still have a lot of information on the places I visited, so if you're interested, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Good luck with your planning!

Re: RECEPTION QUESTIONS

Congratulations!!! Where are you going to look? You'll know the right place for you. I actually have a worksheet at home with the questions. Some may or may not pertain to you but I'll post it when I get home (around 4:15 or so).

Re: RECEPTION QUESTIONS

I should mention that 30 places is definitely too many. I didn't have the best wedding planner, so the search was not narrowed down the way it should've been. In retrospect, we should've looked at maybe 1/2 that. Hope this helps!

Re: RECEPTION QUESTIONS

Tonite we are going to look at Marina Del Rey and Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn. Tomorrow nite is Crescent Beach Club in Bayville and North Ritz Club. Also i have heard this alot, is the bathrooms a major issue with people because people tell me that they have loved places but did not book there because of the way the bathrooms looked

thanks jenniesunshine for the advice!!

Re: RECEPTION QUESTIONS

Welcome and congrats!!!

Check out these articles for guidance on what to ask these halls...

Reception Sites
17 Questions to Ask Your Caterer
Points for the Contract

Also do searches on these boards for info on sites you may be interested in. There is sooo much info here.

My best advice is don't assume anything is 'included' in the price, ask tons of questions and get everything in writing. You'll know when you find the right place.

I used these websites allot when I first started out:

Locations Magazine
Reception Halls

Good luck and have fun!
