I've always been told that the cake cutting signals to the guests that it's ok to leave. If you are worried about guests leaving early, you can always schedule the cake cutting a bit later in the evening. Keep in mind, though, that with a later reception, some guests may not hang around that long.
If I were you, I would take a good look at your guest list and figure out if a good percentage of them would be interested in a longer party. If that's the case, then by all means add an hour.

Re: Reception time???
Originally, I wanted to extend my time as well but I knew there were going to be those early leavers, so I figured the money wasn't worth it.
My venue has a Golf Bar that they can open for us for sort of an 'after party' for whoever wanted to stay for a fraction of the cost of extending the entire party for a whole hour. I really love that idea and will probably be doing that.
Is there someplace that you can move the party to for those who wish to continue?

My current contract is for CH at 7...Reception 8-12...Extending my CH is not really an option because there is a party in the room following. (only thing that $ucks about a place with multiple parties.)
SHould I...Extend the party an hour???? I am so torn, part of me feels like I am spending sooooo much money and the thought of extending would be nice..But then what if I spend most of the last hour saying goodbye to early leavers?????
We're having the same dilemma, although we'd extend the CH 1/2 an hour and the reception 1/2 an hour.
It's hard to justify because there are going to be a lot of people in my family who are going to want to hit the road but, we've gone to some weddings recently that did that and the time flew by.
Definitely think about the type of crowd you are having, if they are a dancing crowd, the extra hour would be a lot of fun. If they are more of a sit, eat and dance a little, it wouldn't be as worth it.

Re: Reception time???
I know a good chunk of our friends would stay late, but the majority of our family would not. So I would not want to spend all that extra money on an added hour at the hall. Any chance your OOT hotel has a bar the partiers can head to after the reception?

Re: Reception time???
My cocktail hr starts at 7, and my party finishes at 1pm.
Some places let you extend the party the day of, thats what my sister did. She saw that most of her guest still wanted to party, went around asking ppl and then extended it.
Talk to your BM and see if they let you extend the day and whats the estimated cost. I asked my BM and he said that he had no problem doing that.
