recommendations for an engagement party...

Ok, so we just moved into our new house last summer (my mom and I ). Our house is on an acre of land so there is more then enough space to have an engagement party in the backyard over the summer. My mom thinks that we should have it in a restaurant / hall (get this) because she thinks people will 'cheat' us on gifts b/c they will assume it was cheap to have it at home. We also wanted to get married here but she says the same thing about gifts.

also, the only reason we will prob def end up using a hall for the wedding is b/c i'm afraid of bad weather. I also don't want a 'mini wedding' engagement party since we are getting married next year.

A few questions for you:

1. Did anyone else have a catered party or wedding at home? Was it costly?

2. Can you recommend restaurants or halls near garden city for a party?

3. Do you think we will be 'cheated' on our gifts?

HELP!

If I had the option I would have had my eparty in our backyard. I would have gotten a nice tent in case of bad weather.

I just booked mine. It is going to be a cocktail party at the Snapper Inn in Oakdale. We were afraid of having something too wedding-like so it is just going to be top shelf open bar, some hor derves, chafing dishes of food, cake/coffee. The price is great there! We are paying $33.50 pp for everything listed above (not including tax/grat). Plus we are having it in this special little area there called the pavilion. It is right on the water and the wall closest to the water is completely open. It is all white and white wood and there are huge wrought iron chandeliers. I love it. Check out their website if you want.

I had my e-party in FH backyard last summer. We rented a tent and it was great! We didn't get 'cheated' on gifts at all. There's some pics in my album-but they're not the best of shots.

We did it at my FIL's backyard... they have a beautiful backyard with a pool, nice size and a wet bar. FH and his father are contractors so they did the whole thing, which is why it's sooo nice.

We had it catered in with a tent and hired a bartender and waiters. It was soo nice and everyone loved it. I don't know the cost, but I think it was up there... It adds up.

FH and I had our e party at a county park. It was great! We had the best time, the kids got to come and enjoy themselves (we picked up a bunch of stuff for them to play with). We also hired someone to come in and BBQ for us so we had really good food (and no one was stuck at the grill) and everyone still tells us what a great time they had and what a different idea it was.

And we got some really great gifts. No one 'cheated' us at all!

mine was at Roma View in Howard Beach. I think it was $35-$40 a person. it was a great time!

we're hosting a small gtg (30-40 guest) and I'm pricing it out now, it may be lesss $$ for us to have it out, than @ home. Once you start compiling the #ers it all adds up, between rentals & the caterers

I had my e-party in my parent's backyard and it was so nice. We hired people to run the party and it was great. The party cost us like $900 total. We had about 70 people and we certainly did not get cheated on gifts. I think cheap people will be cheap no matter where your party is. I give the same gifts no matter what...my friend who got married at Oheka got the same gift as my friend who had her wedding at Viva Loco. I wouldn't let that comment sway your decision with where to have your party.

Your mom is probably right about getting 'cheated' on gifts by having it in your backyard. We had our engagement party at Peppercorns in Hicksville. They had a party room upstairs that was BEAUTIFUL, and everyone loved it! We had about 80 people & it wasn't crowded at all, but even with less people it wouldn't be too big. I can't remember what the cost was pp, but my FMIL said it was a good price, and the food was excellent.

I totally agree -- we also had our e-party in my parent's backyard andI wouldn't have done it any other way. I think we spent like $500 on a tent, tables and chairs for 100 people, and we had it catered by Lombardi's Marketplace for $900 and some odds and ends inbetween. But we had the best time!! Most people will give the same amount towards a gift no matter where you hold your e-party or your wedding. We give the same gift regardless of the location. And many of our friend do the same.

Have your party where you will have the most fun and enjoy yourself!!

I have pictures of our party in my album

thanks!! we did little things to decorate that were very inexspensive -- like the flowers on the tables. I got vases from A.C. Moore for $1.00 each and ordered sunflowers from Costco online wholesale for 50 stems it was $50 I think. so it can be done let me know if you want more info. I researched tent prices from many vendors and would highly recommend the company we used. happy planning!
