reeeeally mad - can someone explain this to me?

I just went to change my address with my car insurance company from my previous address in garden city (where my parents still live but are moving in a couple of weeks) to mine and FH's apartment in franklin square. It is literally one and a half miles from my parents house. So i went to change it online and it says my premium is going to go up $110!!! what the efff is this all about??

If you really want to know... send me an FM and I'll tell you.

I used to work in the customer service department of a large insurance company.

maybe its bc you were living in your parents house and they had the same insurance so they offered you a multi line discount?

do your parents have the same insurance as you for their cars, home owners etc? - that would call for a rate increase once you move.

my insurance was completely independent - i went off my parents' policy a few years ago....

prob b/c theres a lot more car claims made in Franklin Square than in Garden City-that's the only way I could see them arguing this...

Yup......Garden City is a more prestigious area than FS.....therefore, less car theft (theoretically), therefore, less of a risk.

As I FMed you, it's a combination of the two. Frequencies of accident / insurance claims in GC is less than it is in Franklin Square...Try combining policies... And also ask if you are a 'preferred customer'. Explain to the rep that you're dissatisfied with your rate -- the rep will look for savings opportunities.

Yep, it really blows but the car insurance rates vary a LOT based on what town you live in. I have my car insured with GEICO (love them!!) and my rates when I live in Howard Beach, Queens was about $1200 for 6 months. When I moved into FH's house in south Nassau county. my rate literally got cut in 1/2 to $650 every 6 months. I didn't make any changes to my coverage - just the address.

It was quite !!!!!

It does depend on your area. Where you are moving to may be considered a higher risk area. I have a tip for you. I'll FM you

same thing happened to FH only opposite. he used to have insurance at an amityville address and when he changed it to massapequa it went down

What does it mean to be a 'preferred customer'?

Thanks everyone. I got another response from them just now (well, they sent it after I went to bed last night) that if I want to lower the rate I can take defensive driving which they offer online now (huge huge bonus) and to check their list of professional organizations etc.

you guys are so smart - she didn't tell me anything new
