Does anyone know of a good company to test an underground oil tank for leaks and the soil for oil contamination?

I dont know if they can do that at all. I would call a local oil company and ask them about it. Usually they suggest closing the tank and installing an above ground tank.

Definately check with your oil company first, but you can contact Tyree Environmental, Enviroscience and H2M Group. I've worked with them in the past on commercial properties.

Re: REFERRAL: Oil Tank Test Company
I work as an environmental engineer for a consulting company and we do that type of work with companies all the time. What they will do is called a tightness test. Or standpipe test. The soil won't be tested unless you detect a leak or the tank is pulled at which point an environmental assessment will be done.
Some companies I would suggest calling are: Lewis Oil (Plainview) Petro Dry As a Bone (Rockville Centre)

Re: REFERRAL: Oil Tank Test Company
Oh, we use PETRO too. Glad to hear that sort of thing can be done. We want to get an above ground. Is it true that inground tanks are not legal? We were asked if we had an underground tank when we went to insure the house and a friend said thats because its not legal anymore? If that were true I wouldnt think they would even fill them? Anyone know about this? I think I was misinformed! Thanks.

You can not replace a in-ground tank nor can new construction have an in-ground tank.
If you have an in-ground tank, most likely your house is over a certain age, its ok. You should have no problem filling it. We just had our tank taken out last year and the hole filled in. Our tank was in the ground for 30 years and when it was pulled, the guys said it was a really solid tank. No leaks at all!! It would have lasted another 15 years or so but we has already converted to gas.
