? regarding engagement party gifts

I'm engaged & my family is throwing an engagement party at a catering hall on LI. I was wondering: Should I expect gifts at my engagement party? Do most people usually give gifts? I thought they do. I wouldn't have held a party at a catering hall if I didn't think I'd get any gifts. Only one person told me that people usually don't give gifts--I didn't ask for that info, but she told me anyway, lol. Who's right?? I have another friend who told me that people do give gifts...I know my family wouldn't be happy if they heard the only thing I'll get at the end of my party is a big bill, lol. I didn't do a registry yet (b/c I was hoping for cash), but I think I will. Just want to be sure... please advise!
thanks...

Etiquette states that you should not expect gifts for your engagement party but most people nowadays bring gifts. Usually cash and some frames and stuff. You are not supposed to register or put registry cards in the invite. That's for the shower. Some people do register and use word of mouth to get the registry noticed but most people (myself included) would have rather have gotten cash for the Engagement Party. At my engagement party most people gave cash and for the most part were very generous. My parents grumbled a little because their generation I guess really didn't do engagement parties and they didnt know what to give. Some of my moms friends called and asked what to give or where I was registered and I told my Mom to tell them we don't have a reg yet and to give whatever they felt was appropriate. I am so glad my FH and I had the party and we had an amazing time and after it was all said and done my folks were very happy I threw one. Good Luck!
