After reading some posts from earlier today, I remembered when my best friend's Son was in Iraq. I packed a huge box for him, for Christmas, and included a bitty Christmas tree and ornaments. I'm wondering, since it's almost time to be thinking about sending holiday packages overseas, not just to Iraq, but to other areas as well, would you ladies tell us, how/what we can do to cheer those abroad, and provide addresses, please? Re: Regarding Loved Ones in Iraq
My mom runs a project at her church called 'Operation Christmas Child' every year. What they do is collect empty shoe boxes all year and around Christmas everyone give little toys, personal hygine stuff, small games...etc (anything that can fit in a shoe box and isn't about fighting or war). And they pack them up and send them around the world for kids who normally wouldn't get any presents. It's pretty cool. Every year they send more then the year before. Send me an FM if interested and I'll get more inf from my mom!
ETA: I also used to run a church youth group and I have contact with an organization that sets you up with a family to 'adopt' for the holidays and the family will tell you what they need and we would buy it for them and wrap it up and bring it to them for Christmas! That was always so amazing.

while its a great idea I know when MY Fh was over there I wouldn't give out his address but what most of my moms friends did was have me just send them with a card from them. I know some people will give out addresses and those guys would really appreciate it though.
when John was there I sent him a huge box for every holiday so they could decorate and stuff...the guys really Loved it...I also would send food and everything his whole squad needed because otherwise he didn't want it. He is a squad leader and used to tell me send things for his whole squad or nothing at all because its sad, a lot of those guys families don't send anything and it really bring down morale when they see some guys getting things and they get nothing.
I will have a friend there soon and FH is almost defiantly going soon I will have to start getting things ready for care packages again

Hey, we do that at our church too!! You're right, it's a really neat thing to do!!!! I wish I could be a fly on the wall, when the kids open their boxes!! Since we don't have a Granddaughter yet, I like to especially make up boxes with lots of pink girly stuff!! Thanks for your reply!! Mary MOB

Let me know what i can do to help. It's not that i don't like to help total strangers or random people, but i like to help out where i know it'll go. so if your friend or your fh goes back over there, let me know the regulations for what i can send and i'll give you stuff for a package if that's okay.

Yes, my friend's Son said to send stuff for others too, who didn't get, and that's exactly what I'd like to do!! I have heard of giving to various organizations, who will then send the gifts on to those who need them. If any one knows of groups doing this, could you please post? Thanks!! Mary MOB

thats really nice of you, I am sure they would both be so appreciative...they really need just like the basics...socks..tons of them..baby wipes..candy..gum..things to keep them busy
it is a living hell over there and the living conditions suck! so I just sent stuff like once a week so my FH would always have clean sock and stuff :( otherwise they end up wearing the same ones until they can wash...which could be months
gross I know

There is a website that you can go on and send gift baskets to anonymous soldiers. I usually send stuff around the holidays. I found it when my brother was doing his first tour and I was trying to come up with ideas for things I could send him and his squad so they could have Thanksgiving. This is the link if any are interested.

Re: Regarding Loved Ones in Iraq
My FH's best friend is the only one I have sent boxes over to in Iraq. But he loves them and I definitely suggest getting enough stuff so they can all share. I know that makes them all feel better.
Things to include which are great: socks underwear deoterant razors soap baby wipes (very important this is how they bath themselves sometimes toothpaste toothbrushes tissues (those small little packages) magazines books letters pictures (well from loved ones) cookies gum mints cigarettes calling cards packages of those little crystal light bags playing cards decorations for holidays (especially christmas and thanksgiving)
um...there is so much stuff i will get a bigger list for you soon!!!
But I am definitely going to be sending out boxes to FH and hisbest friend. His best friend goes back to Iraq in I believe DEC and FH goes probably in Feb maybe earlier or in March (not sure yet)! I'll keep you updated!!!!
