this is what I have heard...

All-clad is the best...if you think someone will buy you a big set go for it...you can also buy pieces to make more affordable for guests..

calphalon is great too..there is also simply calphalon which is their lesser end, but still great

another great brand is analon

good luck

I registered for All-Clad (Stainless, not non-stick) after reading lots of peoples comments on Epinions. They do cost a lot, but it sounds like they will outlast me... :-)

Faberware

The name might not be as designer as some of the others but my Mom still has her pots from her shower- more than 30 years ago. You can scrub them with brillo and they do not scratch.
Unless you are an experienced cook and use a gas stove you do not need a $400 fry pan. Most electric stoves do not heat the pans the same way a gas one does and the benefits of some of those very expensive cookware is really usable.
If you are just starting out and want a really good quality set go with the Faberware. You can always add a few of the other brands pots and pans once you begin to see what you use most often.

(Also, consider getting the Airbake bakeware. I bake all the time and find it really cooks more evenly and doesn't burn your stuff)

Everyone says All Clad is the way to go so that's what I registered for. I didn't choose any of their non stick pieces though since my mother has one of their frying pans and the non stick is terrible. For non stick pieces, I registered for Berndes- an omellette pan, a large saute pan and a dutch oven. Also registered for a Le Creuset round casserole for soups, stews, and braising. Le Creuset is cast iron cookware with an enamel surface. If you watch the food network, it seems like Emeril and Martha have really migrated toward Le Creuset.

I've had both all clad and calphalon...

I did not like the hard anodized calphalon much. I think ours had some sort of factory defect. The dark grey wore to reveal the aluminum base!
We traded up to all clad. I am so glad we did. It is the best! We have the stainless and our best friends have the ltd. Both earn thumbs up!
Don't bother with the cheap pans in the store, you will only have to replace them in a few years. The all clad will last FOREVER! You will NEVER be sorry you got the best! And it's a gift your guests will be proud to give.
Good luck and happy cooking!

I`ve had both all clad and calphalon...

also another note- if you want your pots/pans to be dishwasher safe and you choose all clad, go with their stainless steel exterior rather than the ltd or master chef since neither of those is dishwasher safe.

Faberware Gets My Vote Too!

Not only to they last forever their customer service is great. My Mom sent back a 40 yr old pot with a broken handle and they fixed it for her.
