Registry and showers

Registry and showers

Last weekend I had my LI shower, hosted by my mom and sister (MOH). I was so surprised, even though I knew it would be coming soon. It was amazing, everything was beautiful (especially the flowers). We got so many wonderful gifts - everyone was so generous.

This weekend my future-MIL hosted a bridal shower tea in Boston for her family & friends. My mom & sister came up with me and it was so nice. We had a great weekend and the tea was so nice - every detail attended to. Anyway again we got some wonderful gifts. One of Brad's aunts bought us a beautiful painting, another gave us an oriental rug!

After the two showers (and our engagement party) there is nothing left on our registry! Should we try and add more before the wedding? I know that traditionally $ is given as gifts at weddings in NY, but Brad's family is from outside of Boston. At his cousin's wedding last year there was a table piled with gifts. What do you think? And what kind of things can I add (we registered for so much already - I don't know what else we could possibly need). Any suggestions for different registry items would be great. We are registered at Bloomingdales, Fortunoffs, and Crate & Barrel.

TIA - Christina

I would definitely register for a few more items. Im not sure what you received, but you can always register for more towels and bedding. Or you can always register at specialty stores like pottery barn, williams sonoma or even home depot.

what about gift certificates? Maybe you could save up for furniture from Fortunoffs and Crate and Barrel...

I did register for China and glasses, but not for Crystal. I might end up registering for Waterford crystal glasses.

I love the Christmas dishes idea.

Thanks ladies.

I would add the crystal and the Christmas plates.

If you didn't register for them here are some more ideas:
a) silverwear or fancy flatwear;
b) Crystal- in addition to the wine, goblet, champagne and iced beverage you can also add high balls, double old fashioned, cordial, port, etc. . .
c) Other possible cyrstal items- ice bucket, vases, platters, cake stand.

Hope this helps.

Re: Registry and showers

My NY friend married a Mass guy and most of his family gave gifts. I would definitely register for more. If money is an issue and you really have received everything you need, many will feel this is tacky, but some stores will give you cash back or you can register for a lot of little things and then exchange them for a big item. My friend did that and then they bought their bed and had credit left over for whcih she used for her baby's clothes. She only exchange those gifts she knew were from people who would not be coming to her house anyway. I know many might think it's in poor taste but it is just an idea and keep in mind in NY we give cash but in other states 5 people will chip in to buy you a $50 gift for the wedding

Thank you ladies!!!! I appreciate the help. Now I have to find some extra time to go add to the registry. Maybe I can do it after work a couple of nights.

David'sbride - money isn't really the issue for us, space is. We live in a 1 bdrm apt on the Upper Westside. My mom is already storing most of our gifts, I am sure she wouldn't mind some more.

Re: Registry and showers

Outside of ny it is considered rude to give money as gifts.. so i hear. FH is from Tenn. and his family is from all over. They ALL give gifts. I would register for more. Have you considered a honeymoon registry. I don't know much about it but I read an article in Newsday that says you can register for portions like massages, scuba rental, dinners, etc.

ETA: agree with above post that OOT people will pool for a 50 dollar gift. Keep in mind that covering the plate in other cities can mean 15$!!!!!!!

Bed Bath and Beyond allows you to exchange gifts for cash and another little known fact is that if you register at Williams Sonoma and return -- you can use it at Hold Everything and/or Pottery Barn so those are the most versatile -- especially if you might need furniture
