Re: Registry Help! comforter vs. duvet
A comforter is one piece - 'stuffing' with the fabric. A duvet is the fabric that goes over a plain white comforter, either down or synthetic if you're like me an allergic to down! I've had a duvet for 5 years and love it. You can choose the type of comforter you want, warmer or lighter (I'm a hot sleeper, so I like it fluffy and light) and just pop it inside the duvet. You can also have a high quality comforter and be able to affordably change the look of your room by having a few duvets on hand which is nice, too, esp since duvets fold up much smaller than full on comforters. The only pain is lining up the comforter inside the duvet before buttoning it, but it's worth it to me, esp when you factor in how much more difficult it is to wash and dry a regular comforter. I would always end up with wet spots, and for some reason never have that problem with my current comforter and duvet. HTH

Re: Registry Help! comforter vs. duvet
Why are the duvets just expensive as the comforter if its just a cover for the comforter?

Re: Registry Help! comforter vs. duvet
A comforter doesn't always need a duvet. There are two types - regular comforters with a print (that you just buy and put on the bed) and down/synthetic comforters that are plain white and you put in a duvet. It IS a pain that they are just as expensive as a printed comforter, but you have the option of more versatility, and usually the down/synthetic comforter you buy is much better quality that the printed comforter (over time the stuffing bunches).
To be honest, I bought a Calvin Klein duvet that I had my eye on for years, and bought a synthetic comforter from Ikea for under $40 bucks that could not have been cozier!

Re: Registry Help! comforter vs. duvet
HAHA - It took me sooooo long to figure out the difference between the two!
I chose to get 1 duvet set (with a separate white comforter) & one comforter (the plain, stuffed type)
I still have a hard time describing the two but my duvet is fancier than the regular comforter....
UMMM, I may sounds confusing - but hope you have figured it out!
Just realized - the sets that they sell together - 'bed in a bag' - those are usually comforters - NOT Duvet's

Re: Registry Help! comforter vs. duvet
If you have a down comforter at home now, you might want to pick up a very cheap on sale duvet (you can probably find one about $20 on clearance) and see how you like it, as a test run. I CAN'T STAND duvets. I tend to twist and turn in my sleep and the comforter never stays inside the duvet right; instead, it twists around, bunches to one side, etc. I HATE IT!!!!! I'm so glad I didn't invest in an expensive one, which is why I recommend you test run a cheap one first and see if you like it!

I used the duvet liner from ikea for a couple of years and it was fine. And you can find douvet covers cheaper than regular comorters depending where you shop.

Re: Registry Help! comforter vs. duvet
I am a twist and turn sleeper-- so lets say I don't want to get one of those comforters that are printed... what are my other options other than buying a comforter and putting a duvet on it?
Thx girls for helping a very confused home decor gal! Want to get it right for my registry!

If you want to avoid a duvet (which is a cover for a plain white down comforter), you can either get a comforter with a pretty print on it, or maybe a quilt if you like that look (that's thinner so you'd also need a light blanket underneath).
