How far in advance should you start planning the rehearsal dinner? Who hosts the dinner?

Typically the groom's family hosts the rehearsal dinner but these days it could be anyone.
I just started planning mine and my wedding is six months away. It depends where you want to have the dinner, some places book up so quickly, especially in NY and Long Island.
