Is it necessary to have an Open Bar at the rehearsal dinner? Most of the places I am looking at will add about 20.00 to the dinner meal if there is an open bar.
In your HONEST opinion, how do you feel about it? What are you doing? Do you think it is 'wrong' to not have it.
All opinions welcome

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
This is a tough question. IMHO I don't think that people should have to pay for alcohol when you invite them to a dinner party.
We are having only beer and wine because we FH and I are picking up the cost of the RD and we simply cannot afford to have an open bar.
I am hoping that people will be not be offended if they are at least offered beer and wine which is why we are going this way.
HTH!

I cant afford open bar.. so they are going to have a choice I think of beer or wine, it depends how the restaurant does it. they should be happy they are getting dinner!!
exactly~~ Just to add beer and wine is expensive IMO. OUr dinner is also at 5pm, we should be done by 8. Its too bad we can't just buy some bottles of wine, it would be a lot cheaper.
I agree with you there.. maybe we can do a BYOB (bring your own Beer)...

but IMO- it's a celebration- and a thank you to everyone invloved with the wedding- I think you need to take care of your guests
that's nice and well if you're rich but $20 a person with 40 people is $800 plus tax and tip!!! they don't need to get trashed because it's a celebration. i think it's unneccessary especially since the dinner will cost $50.
get what you can. it's not neccessary to do open bar--beer, wine and soda is more than enough

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
We're having beer and wine and running a separate tab for anything else.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I think its really nice. My restaurant is having waitress service so I think it might be tacky if you had to whip out your wallet for drink during dinner.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
Personally, I think that beer, wine and soda is sufficient. We will probably be running a tab for whomever orders a drink, which I don't think would be many.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I don't think it's worth it. $20 a head is like 3 or 4 drinks. I would order maybe a glass of wine, but not more than 2. And I am a big drinker.
I would put carraffes of wine on the table, and pay for people if they get beer or other drinks.
ETS- I definitely don't think your guests should pay for their drinks. But I also definitely don't think that your guests should be drinking a lot.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
Never really thought about it, we're not having many people, so most likely beer, wine and soda will be fine.

No I wouldnt want them to buy their own drink, I guess I was thinking the beer and wine route or pay the bill. Fh's parents are paying and we are having about 40 people... so I was trying to keep the cost down since there are helping so much with the wedding...
more ideas PLEASE
ETA- I think people will drink, but we do not have BIG drinkers....I dont want people to get wasted that night either!
find out how much beer and wine would be- then you can run a tab for the other drinks
but IMO- it's a celebration- and a thank you to everyone invloved with the wedding- I think you need to take care of your guests
I agree with Beth on this one, this is what we're planning on doing (my FILs are big party people, especially my FMIL and I think they are planning on paying for it).

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I would just ask that they serve wine and beer. Its far cheaper and if a guest must have his scotch on the rocks, he can pay for it himself.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I think beer and wine is fine. We had an open bar, but I don't think most people drank much. We had to get up very early the next morning, so no one got drunk.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
Ok, I am going to see what inlaws to be want, maybe they wont even care about the extra cost, I was trying to be 'good' BUT, I am leaning towards Beer wine and soda and then hosts will pay for the other drinks...
Guests will NOT pay for their drinks...
Thank you

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I don't think it is necessary. I also don't think enough people will take advantage of it to make it worthwhile (for my family). We will have wine and people can order a drink if they want to.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I think beer, wine and soda is fine. We had an open bar and like someone else said, after the first hour, people mainly switched to wine and soda anyway. Plus, with your wedding the next day, I don't think too many people are going to be looking to get sloshed!!

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
Ours is only 10 pp more for beer wine and soda only! a friend of mine decided to run a bar tab and the cost was more than the catered food!

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
we had beer and wine and had a running tab. I didn't think people would really get anything other than beer and wine to drink.
Well, I was wrong. The bar bill was about $350. I had 40 ppl.
It was really due to a select few, who knew we were paying extra for any other drinks. The best part was this couple got married a few months later, and they just had beer and wine and had the place close the bar so it wouldn't even be an option.
It just annoyed me.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I see no problem with having beer, wine and soda, covered by you and then having your guests pay for any other drinks they may want. The last few rehearsal dinners I went to if I knew that was covered I usually stuck to wine, and I think your guests will too. I don't think it is necessary to add on a full open bar to a rehearsal dinner.
