FH and I are looking to save some money on our rehearsal dinner since we're paying for the entire wedding ourselves. We were thinking of having a dinner at our home after the rehearsal for our families and the bridal party. Has anyone ever done this and what do you guys think of it?

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I think aside from NY, it's really the norm. The only negative I could see would be that it would be a lot of stress for you to have it there and deal with everything, but if you could enlist help from friends/family for cleaning and prep, it would be great. Definitely has a fun intimate feel and you'd have no restrictions.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I attended a rehearsal dinner cookout at a friends house one year. They invited anyone willing to come. I thought it was a wonderful idea. I especially liked it because as a guest, it allowed everyone to interact and get to know each other before the event. At the wedding, we were all more comfortable and talkative, instead of sitting in our own sects...which tends to happen at weddings.

I think doing it at your house is fine. You can everyone bring something to the dinner to make it less stressful on you.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
Thank you everyone for your support and ideas!! I still plan to have it catered so we don't have to worry about cooking and all of that. Some delis have catering packages where you pay per person and they come setup, cook, and cleanup. It's so much more affordable than having it at a restaurant. Let the planning begin!

I think if you had it catered and just bought some beer and wine, you would be in good shape!

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question
I don' t think theirs anything wrong with that at all! My family tends to have very fancy rehearsal dinners, but i feel like thats not really me and FH, so we have been talking about doing it at our favorite pizza place (L&B Spumoni Gardens ...BK Girls will know that place) or having it at a mexican restaurant and having a rehearsal fiesta! So, yeah i agree with the less fancy pants option!
My worry about you having a dinner at your house is the stress. Do you really want to worry about cleaning and preparing before the rehearsal dinner, and then cleaning up after too.... the week of your wedding. That is A LOT of added stress. Maybe look into doing something cute and simple like what i was saying? I Saw something once where a couple had their RD at a retro dinner and they had a menu of all breakfast foods. Apparently it was a big hit! And honestly after buying drinks, and food and party supplies, you really end up spending enough to just have gone somewhere inexpensive.
