i recently found out that my FMIL 'can't' plan the RD cuz she's too busy with work.
and i'm not???? guess i'll add that to my already impossibly long list.

i have been calling just to get the leg work done but prob wont book till mid january..mine is on a thursday night so its a little more available then friday/sat nights

Its never too soon.
A couple months before is ample.
My wedding isn't until September and already my FMIL and I are discussing and researching places..and hopefully will have a place booked by the next month or soo....

omg that happened to me with hotels...i called in september and they said i would have to call back bc they didnt have 07 rates yet....then when i called back in december they were friggin booked!!

We already booked our place, but I'd say it's never too soon to look and get quotes etc. But if you have a place in mind, I'd book it now. You have nothing to lose. Otherwise I think you book like 2 or 3 months in advance. And I think thats even cutting it close.JMO

yeah, i would imagine 3-4 months in advance, depending if there is a party room or not b/c i would imagine that party rooms get booked up fast
