released?

so fh, fmil and i were just sitting around their living room, and fmil turns to fh and says, 'you know, if you're not getting married in the church you have to call and have them release you'..HUH??

fh is catholic, and im non-denominational christian, so were getting married at our rh to not put an emphasis on either religion (neither of us are really religious)

so, what does it mean to be released?

Re: released?

I think the priest at the church I am getting married in mentioned this. He said I would have to notify my parish (I am getting married in a different parish) that I would be getting married at another parish and they would put it in their newsletter or whatever so that if anyone objects they have an opportunity to do so. I thought it was pretty weird myself.

Re: released?

It's probably similar to what I had to do to marry FH.

FH isn't Catholic so we had to get a permission from the diocese to get married (we are getting married in the church).

BUT, any marriage outside of the church without their permission isn't recognized as a marriage (by the church). So maybe it's a 'permission' to get married outside but still have it recognized?

this is called marriage bans. honestly, the first time i saw/heard of this was at LI churches. not in brooklyn. the priest at the LI church said we will need to have ppl sign off that we are 'ok' to marry. if you google marriage bans or check wikipedia it explains it better. its a really old tradition to announce intended marriage and give broader community an opportunity to object (for example, if the couple was actually related ). i dont really think this makes much sense now

but each church has their own way of dealing with it. so just check with teh church. i dont think it should be a big deal....but if you are planning on baptizing future in a catholic church, you may need to do somethin else to make sure the marriage is recognized by the church.
