My father passed away about a year ago. I'm a real 'Daddy's Girl' and I wanted to do something very special in his memory at my wedding.....without having everyone at my wedding 'crying a river'.
Why not have a prayer said for him at the ceremony and add it to your program
You can also dance to 'daddys girl' with another person close to you and have it dedicated to him. I saw this done with pictures of the father on a screen thingy that DJ's use.
Whatever you do is sure to bring some tears but I think it is also important to honor him. Do whatever you feel you can emotionally handle.

Re: Remembering my Father
Sorry for your loss .
There are quite a few things that you can do...you can light a candle in his memory, leave flowers on a chair where he would have sat with some tulle over it (it looks really nice), dance with a family member (a brother if you have one) in his honor, do a special reading.
I think it'll be hard not to make people cry, but it would be a wonderful thing to incorporate him. Best wishes in your planning!

Re: Remembering my Father
I think it would be nice to have pictures of him placed at the reception. Also, if your mother is giving you away, she could say when they ask 'Who gives this woman?' - 'I do in memory of (Your father's name)'.
I think it is wonderful that you want to honor him.

Re: Remembering my Father
I think you can do things to remember your dad by little touches- and not everyone will know what they are. I do NOT rec'd dancing to Daddy's Little Girl...that is not going to be a 'happy' memory moment for you IMO. That is going to be a very, very sad. I really missed my 2 grandmothers during my wedding. Not having them physically with me that day (both passed away 4 years ago) was heartbreaking. Here is what I did. I had both of their photos on my dresser as I got ready. I wore my Nanny's cross and carried the same bible my grandmother carried when she got married. In the Church I had the mothers walk down to Ava Maria, my Nanny's favorite song. I pinned my #1 granddaughter charm into my dress. These were all things that were about ME honoring and remembering them... You can add some words in your program= that can be really nice. So maybe you can think of some small ways to make you feel closer to your dad that day, to honor him.

Re: Remembering my Father
I lost my father suddenly 3 days after my husband and I got engaged (on X-mas no less.) Do whatever you are comfortable with and that is my true suggestion. No one can explain to you how emotional you will be and for me, it was hard enough having my oldest brother take over the duties.
If you have any questions, please feel to PM me.
I am sorry for your loss and I definitely know how difficult it can be.

Re: Remembering my Father
I lost my father about 4 years ago. I think that the prior suggestion is beautiful... I am having my brother walk me down the aisle and I think I will have him say that he gives me away in memory of my father. What a nice idea. As much as I want to honor him, I want it to be a happy day. I don't want to be sobbing. (Although, I'm sure I will be anyway- I cry when watching 'A wedding Story') I will do things suddley, like maybe write a poem and have it in the program. I think that would be perfect.

I'm very sorry for your huge loss. ANYTHING you do will cause others to cry so try not to worry about that. Maybe you could have the church bell rung in his honor as you light a candle? Something solemn and with no words? Hope you find something that makes your heart happy!

I am so sorry for your loss. I think there are some great ideas here. I like the idea of lighting a candle in his honor and I love the idea of having your mom give you away in honor of your dad. It might sound silly, but maybe you can save an empty seat at the reception where your dad would have been.
When my Dad's father died many years ago, it hit him really hard. For special occassions, like Christmas, he would put a plant on a seat in the corner. That was his way of symbolizing his presence, but maybe you can use something that would represent your dad better.

Re: Remembering my Father
I did a few things in memory of my dad. We had the poem 'Footsteps' framed set up w/ a candle and a single calla from my Bo-K on a small table during the ceremony. Through out CH rooms we had family wedding photos and he was in some of them. After the processional, but before my mom walked me down the aisle we had the ushers shut the doors to the ceremony room and the DJ played 'in my Life' by the Beatles. then they opened the doors and my mom and walked down (I think the song got my guests the most emotional).

Re: Remembering my Father
go to www.exclusivelyweddings.com
they have a memory candle that comes with a flower bud vase for loved ones who have passed.
I'm getting this, my mother died 3 years ago and I'm putting the bud vase on the piano at the entrance of my hall. (that is where the placecards will be) so that everyone will see it, and the lit candle for her on my Dad's table with my Aunts and Uncles. I will also have my officiant mention a moment of silence in her memory during the ceremony. I don't want it to be too sobby either. I want to be happy that day not cry. hope this helps. if you need any mroe support FM me.

Re: Remembering my Father
As a newcomer to this site, my engagement is one that will be bittersweet.
(Though I was told to post a date of engagement in my profile, it is not yet official - just an approximation - the ring is a technicality)
I have two critically ill parents. Dad has been in the hospital since October and may not come home and will more than likely remain in nursing care. Mom is going in tomorrow for open heart surgery.
The thought of not having one or both of my parents on the most special day of my life plays through my head everyday. You should know that your father's spirit will be there regardless of how you choose to honor his memory. I consider myself quite lucky to have had a man in my life who showed me how to choose the man who will take care of the heart he gave me.
Enjoy this special time and smile everyday knowing he is watching you.

Re: Remembering my Father
I know how you feel my dad was my bestfriend and passed away 5yrs ago this April. I liked the idea of dancing with someone close to you for me it's my 13yr. old son and having the dj flash pics of me and my dad when I was little on the montage screens. I've also included him and FH & My grandparents on the back of our program. Believe me it's been 5years and there is nothing that can be done that wont make you or anyone who was close to him not cry!!

Re: Remembering my Father
I lost my Dad 7 months ago and we had already picked out a song to dance to at the time so I am going to still dance to that song with my Brother and dedicate it to my Dad. I'm also going to put a poem in the program for him too

Re: Remembering my Father
I'll be missing my dad at my wedding too. But in his memory we are making a donation to the Cancer Association and it will be in his name.
We also will have a candle burning at the church ceremony for him and have a special prayer said for him and the others we are missing that day.
