Removing Wisdom Teeth?

Removing Wisdom Teeth?

I just got back from the dentist and he said that I need my wisdom teeth removed within the next month! They grew in beautifully (that's what the dentist said) but one of them is developing problems so he wants all of them out. The dentist told me that the surgery should not last more than 1 hour and I'll be out of work 1 day tops. I'm scared and nervous because the most work I've ever had on my teeth/mouth was having a cavity filled. What should I expect?

If they arent impacted, the roots are fine and clear, then why do you need surgery. Dentist should be able to remove under novicaine.

'No need to be put out.

OMG I just went through getting 2 taken out in Jan. I have to tell you it hurts like a b i t c h!!! One of mine was semi impacted I dont know if that contributed to my pain but I was swollen like a chipmunk for about a week and couldnt really open my mouth for the same amount of time. And eatting... forget about it! Pudding, yogert and mushy food was ALL you can eat and you cant drink through a straw... its a real PITA. If you need anything just ask. I have to have the other 2 taken out in the next few months and I dont wanna go

They are not impacted but one of them is starting to decay. The dentist said it is common because it is very difficult for a toothbrush to reach back there. He also said that I do not need to be knocked out. If it's as simple as getting a filling, why do I need to take the next day off of work?

I was knocked out because I didnt want to hear the tooth crack out of my head... EWE. You are probably going to be in pain and look kinda funny. I did.

Great advice kptoys and Wacky! Who wants to hear bone cracking? And after a couple of drinks, I should feel no pain!!!

Re: Removing Wisdom Teeth?

just be careful with the drinks - if they have to put you under (that's what they did to me) they won't do it if you've had a couple!

shes not going under. After she gets them pulled. Youll just have to sip through a straw

Re: Removing Wisdom Teeth?

i took FH to get his teeth out..... All he can say is get the anestesia to knock you out for the operation....If you can get them all done at once, its not too bad.

Re: Removing Wisdom Teeth?

You cant sip through a straw... you could remove the blood clot and winde up with a dry socket (more painfull)

Re: Removing Wisdom Teeth?

Does this mean I have to drink intravenously?

I had two removed and wasn't knocked out. IT WAS HORRIBLE. Make sure you take a pain killer before the novocaine wears off otherwise it will be the WORST pain of your life!!!!

Other than that-do not worry...two weeks later you will forget that you even had it done. I did a year ago and now i have even forgotten what side of my mouth they were on

Re: Removing Wisdom Teeth?

I have to say I had heard so many horror stories I was soooo scared to go get mine pulled. I had all 4 done at once and they were ALL impacted....needless to say I was asleep! It took 45 minutes, and I was sent home with nice painkillers. I had it done on Thurs, thinking I'd take off 2 days of work and be back Mon. The first 2 days I didn't really eat or drink, just took the Percoset and a lot of ice packs on my face. Alternating from side to side every 20 min. FH was so good about getting me the ice packs b/c i would get a headche when i got up and it would start to throb. I was pretty swollen and bruised but the pain wasn't too bad. After that I took plain Tylenol. I couldn't eat normal though for about 2 weeks and had to take off Monday from work also because I had a headache whenenever I moved to much.

I tend to have a pretty high pain tolerance, I think I was more uncomfortable than in pain (i'm sure the percoset helped that )

I had all 4 done at once and they were all impacted. It was the most horrible pain I've ever had. My whole face was bruised for about a week. I think if they are not impacted, it won't hurt so bad, although I'm sure you'll still have some pain. Why do they need to take all of them out if only one is decayed?

Re: Removing Wisdom Teeth?

I had 2 taken on an emergency. I was in pain for days and the other 2 I had removed a few months later. One was impacted. The oral surgeon used Novicaine both times and I didn't feel a thing. And I'm a big baby when it comes to pain. But after the novicaine wore off, I was in a lot of pain, but the Vicaden he prescribed took care of that I did need a couple of days to recover though. Also, the Vicaden made me very sleepy and unable to think straight Is it possible for you to have them done on a Friday and then you have the whole weekend to recover? I wouldn't take the chance. Everyone is different.

Good Luck
