Rental Car in Oahu and Maui

Rental Car in Oahu and Maui

Aside from making sure we get a convertible - can anyone suggest whether we need the car for a full week or just a few days in each? Plus, do most hotels charge for parking? Also, is the airport the only place to rent a car? Thanks!! ;-)

We were able to rent a car for one day directly from our hotel in Oahu. We got in very late at night and I didn't want to have to figure out the directions.

On Maui we picked up our rental car at the airport, but I'm sure you can get one from the hotel as well (although it likely costs a bit more).

I have heard for Oahu you don't need a car your entire stay. You can take the trolley or the bus. Very convenient and inexpensive. If you plan on going to the North Shore, then I would recommend getting a car. We plan on getting a car for probably one day to go to the North and also to drive around and sight see the outskirts of Honolulu. Most hotels there is a parking fee.
My Matron said that they rented a car for a day in Maui to drive to the volcano area but didn't stop. They just drove down that main road sight seeing. I am not sure of the town name.

I didn't go to Oahu but I would recommend one for everyday in Maui. We used ours everyday. If we didn't go on a day trip we used it to go out to dinner. We didn't get a convertible in Maui but did in Kauai. In Maui to upgrade to a convertible was something like $75 more a day - something really unreal but in Kauai it was only $20/day more. We got both our rentals at the airport because we needed it to get to the hotels.

Ask about different deals with your insurance or credit cards. The deals were much different on each island for some reason. (Don't just look at the honeymoon package they try to give you!).

As far as I know most hotels make you pay for parking.

We're renting a car for the entire week in Maui, but for Oahu, we're going to play it by ear. We heard you don't need one because they have transportation (the trolley). There is a parking fee at most hotels in Oahu and Maui. We're picking our rental car up at the airport in Maui.

We rented a car in Maui and we didn't rent one in Oahu. If you are going to Pearl Harbor you can go with the tour company and they pick you up by van right from the hotel. The trolley in Oahu makes getting around really easy. I wish we had one more day there to drive to Diamond Head. I think you might need a car for that. In Maui we used the car almost every day. Our hotel was in Wailea and we drove to Lahaina and spent the day there, we went to the Aquarium, and if you want to do the road to Hana you can use the car for that and that will take the whole day.
