Repost from BHB - Wedding cake

I tasted some cakes from Audrey's yesterday as samples. I was wondering what kinds of cakes you guys were getting and what icing. I like the look of fondant, but my FH, MOH and mom HATE the way it tastes. I'm torn...they all like the whipped cream icing. Since we're november, its possible. I just don't know how whipped cream looks as icing...or buttercream for that matter. AAHH...any pictures or suggestions?

i'm in the same boat as you..since i am getting married at Lands End we are using audreys bakery too

i love the look of fondant as well..but hate the taste
i think we are going to get the fondant on the outside but then get the whipped cream/or whatever it is with the red velvet cake...there is just so many options

when i went to my food tasting in Feb they gave me a list of cake prices and options of the type of cakes

for example, shapes, cake choices, fondant, different kinds of cream, if you want flowers, ribbons, dots...everything

ask FF to see if they have that list or call Audrey's for a list

I have the list..Tom gave it to me at an event. I had my heart set on the red velvet..but I wasn't crazy for the cream cheese filling at all. I'm bummed bc thats what I really wanted. There were other cakes that I liked, but I'm so torn on the icing. FH is really against fondant, even if we put something else underneath it. I just don't know how it'll look with anything else....AAHH

For those brides (and grooms) that don't like the look of fondant......stay with buttercream. When done correctly you can't even tell the difference. Buttercream tends to be a lot less sweeter and goes with a larger variety of fillings. Whipped cream is probably great for a smaller cake, but whipped cream NEEDS refriggeration. I say stick with the Buttercream.

(if anyone has cake questions FM me My dad owns a bakery, i'm full of knowledge or i can ask LoL)

I met with Tommy at Black Forest and here's how he explained the whipped vs. butter cream. FMIL wants real whipped cream. He says it's very difficult to get a really nice stiff design on the cake with that. So we opted for the butter cream (shhhh don't tell FMIL ) which is not supposed to be too sweet.

Whipped cream is very soft and doesn't make designs very well. Also, not everyone likes whipped cream. Buttercream can look nearly as smooth as fondant. However, you can put buttercream underneat the fondant, and I've heard of halls that remove the fondant before serving. I heard this because some bakeries are now doing white chocolate instead of fondant, and I read about one baker who gets upset when halls take off the tasty white chocolate outer coating because they think it's fondant. White chocolate is still an ultra-expensive baker option, though, I believe. But you could ask if they offer it.

We didn't have any worries about ours, as we're having a special cheesecake decorated with real flowers made by my mom as the main 'brides cake,' a tower of cupcakes with buttercream from Black Forest Bakery (the 'cake' that came with the hall package) and a chocolate groom's cake from Black Forest, that the groom doesn't know about.

Who knew picking a cake would be such an issue!
